Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

Barrel Monster Bust
Cops: Man created public art with items swiped from construction site
JUNE 12--A North Carolina man is facing criminal charges for creating an amusing piece of public art from construction barrels. Joseph Carnevale, 21, was nabbed Wednesday after a Raleigh Police Department investigation determined that he was responsible for the work (seen below) constructed May 31 on a roadway adjacent to North Carolina State University. Carnevale, pictured in the mug shot at right, was charged with misdemeanor larceny for allegedly building his orange monster from materials pilfered from a construction site. According to an arrest warrant, Carnevale "destroyed three road blocking barrels by cutting and screwing them together to form a statue." Police estimated that Carnevale's artwork caused $360 in damages to Hamlett Associates, the North Carolina construction company that owned the barrels. Carnevale is scheduled for a July 21 court appearance in Wake County.

Seems to me that $360 for art like that is a bargain.

It think the question of art being a crime is entirely analogous to what Woody Allen said about sex being dirty.

If it's done right.

I agree that it is awesome, however, destruction of property is destruction of property.

Isn't half the point of guerilla art, the fact that you are breaking the law to do it? Shouldn't have gotten himself caught.

Wooooow. About, oh, maybe twenty years ago whilst driving home from a --ahem-- gathering of friends, I intentionally hit about fifty of those things with my car, painted flat black. They were set up on top of a temporary water line which was part of a replacement project in my home town. I went down one side of the road, knocking them off (they bounce really well), and had so much fun I turned the Black Sabbath tape over, turned around and nailed all the ones on the other side of the street, cackling the whole way.
The next morning I returned to the scene of the crime on my way to someplace or other and there were orange barrels all over the fucking place, mostly in lawns, one in a tree, and several junctions of water main were spouting water. A lot of water.

Ahh, good times. Glad I survived them.

Looks like they are stretching the truth there to inflate the damages figure:

http://www.trafficsafetystore.com/SubCa ... =4&SCID=29

I'm betting that company didn't pay near that amount, since they surely buy in bulk. From the link above:
Item # Product Sheeting 1-14 15-49 50+ Quantity
DrumEGTire Channelizer Drum with Recycled Tire Base Engineer Grade (EG) $62.00 $51.50 $44.25 Add
DrumHITire Channelizer Drum with Recycled Tire Base High Intensity (HI) $94.00 $78.50 $67.25
Depending on quality of reflective, that's $44.25 each or $67.25 each when bought in quantity, which they most likely did.

Since some of these barrels commonly get damaged and destroyed on almost every job, companies seldom go out and buy just two or three, they buy huge batches once a year.

To be sure, damaging someone else's property is wrong and at bare minimum the guy should reimburse the company for the cost of the barrels he took.

Hell, I'd give that company $360 to let the dude off, and keep the big orange barrel monster.
