Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

If you cannot Debauch because you get an IP blacklist error, try Debauching again time. It may work immediately, it may take a few attempts. It will work eventually, I don't think I had to click debauch more than three times. Someone is overzealous at our hosting company, but only on the first couple of attempts.

Some unpleasant miscreant was firing incessant database queries at our server, which forced the Legal Department of our hosting company, via their Abuse subdivision, to shut us down. No I have none.
All I can do it button the hatches, and tighten up a few things. Such as time limits on how long you may take to compose a post and hit Debauch! As of 24/01/10, I've set that at 30 minutes for now.

To restrict further overloads, any unregistered users had to be locked out.
How do we know who is or isn't an unregistered user?
By forcing anyone who wants in to Log In.
Is that annoying?
Yes. But there's only so much the Administerrerrerr can do to keep this place running.

Again, if you have any problems: get in touch.

People Die

Post by Bo_9 » Mon Jun 15, 2009 2:53 pm

Nobody dies with dignity.

I just attended the funeral of a very close friend's father. I new this man. Not as well as I should, but I knew him.
This man at fourteen years knew he was a burden to his family, and hitchhiked to KC to stand in work lines so he would have money to send home. Ended up in California and worked for GM and Lockheed, returning as a foreman to local Helio Aircraft. Supported several children and raised my best friend, without whom I would not be riding today. I know the he has bought groceries for people who could not. But when necessary, he was a very hard man. The kind of man who's character is very hard to find around here these days. If you shook his hand you were his friend with all the love and support that went with that. He played with my kids, and his own grand kids with equal joy. He was a musician and played country swing guitar, thankfully his musical interest and skill has been passed to his children and grandchildren.
I deeply regret his loss, but am glad he is no longer suffering as he was in the end.

Sounds like good stock. Hopefully life's circle will replace his departure with the arrival of another just as well suited to living a meaningful life. Perhaps in his family, this man's life, lived in his way, planted the seed for another of his caliber from the younger generations... Sorrow for your loss, but joy from your words. I would imagine that if spirits can smile, this dude's spirit is doing just that as a result of your words. All the best to his family.
