Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

Food! Real Food!

Post by Priest » Wed Jul 01, 2009 12:46 pm

Those of you not from Chicago may not fully appreciate the magnitude of my enthusiasm about food, and hot dogs in particular. This is most likely because those of you not from Chicago have never had a hot dog before.

Now, you may think you have. Deep down, in your little black soul, you may honestly believe you've had a good hot dog. You may go to your grave with the conviction of belief that this is true.

Of course, you'd still be wrong. You have no idea what you're talking about. No offense intended, just mathematical fact.

Were you to be at my home in Maryland right now, I could cure you of this unfortunate disillusion right quick, because what just arrived at my door via UPS guy?

Fucking Portillo's, that's what! Overnight Extra Rush shipped on dry ice and sealed in a special container, here it is on my table, ready for TFB and I to chow down on until we explode. Which I am going to do right now, as she just walked in.

<a href="http://s37.photobucket.com/albums/e95/y ... los001.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e95/y ... los001.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Why, oh why can I not get a fucking poppyseed hot dog bun anywhere but home?
<a href="http://s37.photobucket.com/albums/e95/y ... los003.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e95/y ... los003.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Pickles!

Real relish (not that food colored green shit I find here)
<a href="http://s37.photobucket.com/albums/e95/y ... los008.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e95/y ... los008.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I'm going to freak out if I don't eat. Next time, it's going to be Italian beef (another thing that you've never had outside of Chicago. Don't even think for a second that you have). I will have some local Terrorists over at that time to partake.

All of this can be gotten through Lou Malnati's shipping site, and is well worth it.

Update.

The Filthy Baker has gone hot dog bananas upon arrival home. Photographic evidence-

The Hot Dog Dance is mostly due to the fact that neither of us have had a hot dog in over a year (longer for her, as I went home last summer and ate like a fiend)...

Anything served in a poppy-seed bun must be good.

Enjoy your delights of the gods!

This will be my last comment in this thread - if I see those images again, I think I might snap.
All I have to look forward to culinary-wise is an approved-meat containing döner for lunch and bare potatoes with red-cabbage for dinner. Dieting sucks ass (literally).

Oh, Grünkohl mit Kartoffeln und Mettwurst, I miss you so much...

BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

I was seriously going to go take a picture of my Jeep window with "I (heart) Portillo's" bumper sticker (right under ootmik ones) when I read the title and saw it was you, just to taunt you.

Now that I've READ your post, I see where you're coming from. I was dying for a dog yesterday, never got to it though. Maybe tonight...

The man speaks truth folks. You can't do a hot dog like we do here. Your mistake if you think otherwise.

Those look fantastic! We have nothing like that here, just really good Michigans.

I am a mere 13 days away from stuffing my face with some wholesome Pittsburgh goodness that can only be found in the Primanti Bros sandwich. Please observe the deliciousness contained between these two slices of fresh italian bread:

Image

That is homemade cole slaw (supposedly with bacon grease in it as the special ingredient), french fries, tomatoes, meat (that appears to be capicola), egg, and cheese all piled into a sandwich. I get all weepy when I think about how good they are!!

Thats pretty funny. In Michigan, a "Michigan" is called a " Coney " or "Coney Dog" . This would be typically served in "Coney Island" restaurant which often also specializes in gyros and other Greek entrees. I think food nomenclature is interesting.

I have had one of those in Chicago, I forget the name of the place, but I was assured by many locals that it was well known.
It was good, but not mind blowing.

Not intentionally. I really did like it. I think it's just that I grew around Cheesesteaks. So that's kind of what I was expecting. The juice threw me a bit.
Now the pizza I had while I was there. Whoa, fantastic stuff.

Believe it or not, I think I've had a hot dog to rival Portillo's (though I've never had a Portillo's dog, so I can't really say for sure).

I was on my first gig at the Corona Club in Ciudad Acuña, and the drummer took me across the road to Ma Crosby's for fishbowl margaritas (also amazing). When we walked outside, there was this hotdog vendor with his little cart. I thought, "Hot dogs? In Mexico? I don't think so!" But the drummer was quite excited to see the little dude with the cart. He got a couple and immediately inhaled one with great gusto, so I figured I had to try it and I was glad I did! I don't know who or what they put in those dogs, but they're damn tasty!

Never had a dog all the times I was in Chicago, but I agree that there is nothing like the taste of home when you are far away. The fried whitefish sammich is a local delicacy back in Louisville, and noone here understands why I enjoy a McD Filet-O-Fish when I get one, but it sates me as necessary until I can get back to teh bluegrass and have a sammich at Kingfish.
