Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

Some unpleasant miscreant was firing incessant database queries at our server, which forced the Legal Department of our hosting company, via their Abuse subdivision, to shut us down. No I have none.
All I can do it button the hatches, and tighten up a few things. Such as time limits on how long you may take to compose a post and hit Debauch! As of 24/01/10, I've set that at 30 minutes for now.

To restrict further overloads, any unregistered users had to be locked out.
How do we know who is or isn't an unregistered user?
By forcing anyone who wants in to Log In.
Is that annoying?
Yes. But there's only so much the Administerrerrerr can do to keep this place running.

Can we get a little context on that sig line of yours?
Races condemned to one hundred years of solitude do not get a second chance on earth. ~Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Only thing by him I read was Chronicle of a Death Foretold, and I didn't particularly enjoy it (maybe because it was part of the curriculum and we had to pic every goddamn paragraph apart...).

If there were absolutely anything to be afraid of, don't you think I would have worn pants?

I said I have a big stick.

Well, to give you full context would be a plot spoiler.
Let's just say that if you were to read 100 Years of Solitude, it's a very powerful line.
I liked the book a lot. I would suggest it.

I'm not much of a reader these days. I will say that "100 years of solitude" and "Love in the time of Cholera" were well worth reading in my opinion.
How can it be fun if there's not at least an outside chance of dying?

"Solitude" that's the one about the ice, right? Great book.

There's a part about ice in it, yes.
It's not really ABOUT ice, it's about a family known as the Buendias, whose rise and fall is intertwined with a town called Macondo in Mexico.

I was just being a smartass. It really is a great book though.

Magical Realism? I think that's how I would describe it.

That is a good way to describe it.
The way he writes about magical things with such nonchalance, making them seem just a normal part of every day life is really amazing. It's a large part of what makes the story captivating and compelling.

I can also recommend Innocent Erendira and Other Stories.

If you like magical realism, you should also read some John Crowely.
Elitist, arrogant, intolerant, self-absorbed.
