Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

Some unpleasant miscreant was firing incessant database queries at our server, which forced the Legal Department of our hosting company, via their Abuse subdivision, to shut us down. No I have none.
All I can do it button the hatches, and tighten up a few things. Such as time limits on how long you may take to compose a post and hit Debauch! As of 24/01/10, I've set that at 30 minutes for now.

To restrict further overloads, any unregistered users had to be locked out.
How do we know who is or isn't an unregistered user?
By forcing anyone who wants in to Log In.
Is that annoying?
Yes. But there's only so much the Administerrerrerr can do to keep this place running.

Holy Rollers fans?

Post by smashinator » Wed Sep 23, 2009 11:18 am

Not sure if this should be in Effete Snobbery or not, but the Holy Rollers novels have definitely been psychological abuse, so here I am.

Anyway, I've spent the last year dicking around with the latest in the series (Charlatan), with the intention of getting it published.

I'm shooting to have the rewrite DONE on Sept. 30, and I'm looking for a few brave souls to critique the rewrite. I've already got one guy signed up, but it'd be good to have many sets of eyes. I'm looking for feedback on pacing, how well the characters are developed, gaping plot holes, and if you spot any egregious factual errors I'd like to know about those too.

So... anyone game for reading this thing?

I want to read it, I don't know how to do a critique though.

I really liked the others, kind of like comic books without pictures!

Linky? I think I read some of this a while ago. Some demons hanging out in a bar waiting for an assignment or something?

I'll be glad to help.

I'll help as much as I can.

Thanks guys, no linky yet - I'm still working on it. I plan to have it ready Oct. 1.

And to answer the "what do we do?" question:

I need people to read it and let me know if any parts are horribly boring, if there are any parts that make you say "Wait, that doesn't make sense," and if there are any glaring stupid errors (eg. snowmobiles with "twist" throttles...) that you can spot.

Stay tuned!
