Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

1943 Guide to Hiring Women:

1. Pick young married women. They usually have more of a sense of responsibility than their unmarried sisters, they're less likely to be flirtatious, they need the work or they wouldn't be doing it, they still have the pep and interest to work hard and to deal with the public efficiently.

2. When you have to use older women, try to get ones who have worked outside the home at some time in their lives. Older women who have never contacted the public have a hard time adapting themselves and are inclined to be cantankerous and fussy. It's always well to impress upon older women the importance of friendliness and courtesy.

3. General experience indicates that "husky" girls - those who are just a little on the heavy side - are more even tempered and efficient than their underweight sisters.

4. Retain a physician to give each woman you hire a special physical examination - one covering female conditions. This step not only protects the property against the possibilities of lawsuit, but reveals whether the employee-to-be has any female weaknesses which would make her mentally or physically unfit for the job.

5. Stress at the outset the importance of time the fact that a minute or two lost here and there makes serious inroads on schedules. Until this point is gotten across, service is likely to be slowed up.

6. Give the female employee a definite day-long schedule of duties so that they'll keep busy without bothering the management for instructions every few minutes. Numerous properties say that women make excellent workers when they have their jobs cut out for them, but that they lack initiative in finding work themselves.

7. Whenever possible, let the inside employee change from one job to another at some time during the day. Women are inclined to be less nervous and happier with change.

8. Give every girl an adequate number of rest periods during the day. You have to make some allowances for feminine psychology. A girl has more confidence and is more efficient if she can keep her hair tidied, apply fresh lipstick and wash her hands several times a day.

9. Be tactful when issuing instructions or in making criticisms. Women are often sensitive; they can't shrug off harsh words the way men do. Never ridicule a woman - it breaks her spirit and cuts off her efficiency.

10. Be reasonably considerate about using strong language around women. Even though a girl's husband or father may swear vociferously, she'll grow to dislike a place of business where she hears too much of this.

11. Get enough size variety in operator's uniforms so that each girl can have a proper fit. This point can't be stressed too much in keeping women happy."

How much harder is it for women today? Talk amongst yourselves. (My personal favorite is #9... if only it took harsh words to "break her spirit")

Yeah, them "good old days".

Numbers 2 and 6 might apply to any inexperienced new employee, though, regardless of gender.

hmm... aren't us "husky" women more likely to put out too? Don't we allow you to get a little more creative in the sack than skinny women? I think is cause we are afraid you would leave us.

I work with an older skinny unmarried girl with feminine weakness who never worked outside the house before. she can't find her own nose to put her glasses on if someone doesn't make her a planning and a map.
the guy is serious, believe me.

10 doesn't apply tho.

Excepting the "break her spirit" part, nine is pretty accurate. As for 10, I got in big trouble for accidentally dropping an f-bomb around an older lady once too.

As a man who has both had women bosses and women subordinates in the workplace, I completely agree a different style is needed when dealing up or down.

I'm not sure if you're just kidding me, but having had multiple female subordinates and bosses both in the corporate world and the military, I've learned the hard way men and women, in general, don't accept criticism (or give criticism) in the same fashion. The article just said as much in a somewhat patronizing manner of the time in which it was written.

Just to get The Great Sexism Debates of 2009 going again, here's my guide to hiring men:

1. Pick older, crusty men. They usually have better, more rambling stories than their younger counterparts. Additionally, they're far less likely to be sued for sexual harassment for flirtatiousness, mostly because younger female coworkers believe them to be harmless.

2. When you use older men, try to get ones who have worked outside the home at some time in their lives. Older men who have never contacted the public have a hard time adapting themselves and are inclined to be somewhat odd and set in their ways. It's always well to impress upon older men the importance of friendliness, courtesy, and proper removal of nostril and ear hair.

3. General experience indicates that fat dudes - those who are just a little on the heavy side - tend to eat more than their thinner counterparts.

4. Retain a physician to give each man you hire a special physical examination - one covering male conditions. This step not only protects the property against the possibilities of frequent urination due to prostate conditions, but also reveals whether the employee-to-be has any male weaknesses which would make him mentally or physically unfit for the job. Make sure this "physician" checks the size and number of the man's cars, boats, guns, belt buckles, and motorbikes.

5. Stress at the outset the importance of time the fact that a shot or two of Old Grandad here and there is just fine, but any more may seriously delay schedules. Until this point is gotten across, service is likely to be slowed up.

6. Give the male employee a definite schedule of rote responsibilities. Numerous properties say that men make excellent workers when they have their jobs cut out for them, and when you block them from surfing the internet for porn.

7. Whenever possible, encourage the male employee change his socks at least a couple times during the week. This helps facilitate overall workplace productivity and prevents high turnover.

8. Give every man an adequate number of rest periods during the day. Workers tend to work more efficiently when allowed to pee or get a cup of coffee every once in awhile.

9. Be tactful when issuing instructions or in making criticisms. Old men are often sensitive; they can't shrug off harsh words the way others do, and will often try to initiate drunken brawls.

10. Make sure to use strong language every so often around men. Lazier men especially tend to work better when instructions are enunciated with harsh language and/or threats to their personal safety.

11. Do not allow men to come into the workplace without pants.
