Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

If you cannot Debauch because you get an IP blacklist error, try Debauching again time. It may work immediately, it may take a few attempts. It will work eventually, I don't think I had to click debauch more than three times. Someone is overzealous at our hosting company, but only on the first couple of attempts.

If you have problems logging in, posting, or doing anything else, please get in touch.
You know the email (if you don't, see in the registration info below), you know where to find the Administerrerrerr on the Midget Circus.

Some unpleasant miscreant was firing incessant database queries at our server, which forced the Legal Department of our hosting company, via their Abuse subdivision, to shut us down. No I have none.
All I can do it button the hatches, and tighten up a few things. Such as time limits on how long you may take to compose a post and hit Debauch! As of 24/01/10, I've set that at 30 minutes for now.

To restrict further overloads, any unregistered users had to be locked out.
How do we know who is or isn't an unregistered user?
By forcing anyone who wants in to Log In.
Is that annoying?
Yes. But there's only so much the Administerrerrerr can do to keep this place running.

Again, if you have any problems: get in touch.

It's the icon the hacker known as "The Laughing Man" uses in the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex TV Series.
The text going around the edge is a quote from Catcher in the Rye.
So it's a meta-quote of sorts.

I tried reading it and couldn't get into it.
But apparently he was a great literary genius, so it is a great loss.
If there were absolutely anything to be afraid of, don't you think I would have worn pants?

I said I have a big stick.

Apparently everyone who ever wrote anything worth reading during the 20th century is dying.

I loved Catcher in the Rye but if you have the chance to read any of Salinger's short stories do it. I particularly like "Teddy."

I thought this was pretty funny
http://www.theonion.com/content/news/bu ... _mourn_j_d
CORNISH, NH—In this big dramatic production that didn't do anyone any good (and was pretty embarrassing, really, if you think about it), thousands upon thousands of phonies across the country mourned the death of author J.D. Salinger, who was 91 years old for crying out loud. "He had a real impact on the literary world and on millions of readers," said hot-shot English professor David Clarke, who is just like the rest of them, and even works at one of those crumby schools that rich people send their kids to so they don't have to look at them for four years. "There will never be another voice like his." Which is exactly the lousy kind of goddamn thing that people say, because really it could mean lots of things, or nothing at all even, and it's just a perfect example of why you should never tell anybody anything.

I just want out point out that he hasn't published anything since the sixties, the literary genius has been lost for 45 years. The death of the man is, well, just the death of a man. Sad in its own way but not a great loss to humankind.

I've read some of his short stories and they were fine, but I never read Catcher In The Rye, maybe because the non sequitur of a name bothers me for some reason, maybe because I've had enough the 'coming of age' genre for a lifetime or two. I might jump on the Black Mariah and read it now though.
