Considering the number of non-natives with whom I work -- from Russians to Indians/Pakistanis to Lebanese/Syrians to Europeans -- every one of them LOVE the US, and they live here because they want to be here. American citizenship is still very much a Good Thing, and these folks have worked really hard to get it.
Don't kid yourself, the rest of the world is pretty jacked-up and crazy. I've talked to all the above (non-native) folks, and many more, and what it boils down to is that while there are some serious fundamental problems here in the States, it's still a goddamn good place to be -- for some of us, anyway.
Jaeger wrote my thoughts, so I won't belabor. I've been around, and people still want to come here, AND, once they're here, they prefer to stay, including the Indian family I stayed with last weekend in AZ.
Funny:

The only place where food has made me sick is Mexico. And my wife, from Taiwan, got sick from food in . . . Taiwan, when she returned there a few years ago. We all know we eat processed shit, but try living in many many countries where the producers or their govt. don't give a shit about the flies, dirt, ratshit, dog hairs or lead content in their fooods.

Right. Teach English to all tjhose people, many of them who want to move here.
There's some truth to what he's saying, but he's really full of shit where he really overreacts on many other points. It's all balck and white for him. America=shithole, the rest of the world=panacaea. He can stay whever he wants, I don't care, Europe, Canada, Asia, Souyth America--those are some excellent, beautiful places to live contentedly. But I wouldn't be surprised to hear if he slinked back here eventually, because things here aren't as shitty as this knowitall insists.
Plus, I ran this by some of the students in my center, who come from all over--Mexico, Lebanon, Cameroon, Bangladesh, Vietnam, China, Pakistan, Argentina, and Portugal, to name a few. The general concensus is he's naive, and they are happier here, and their families are trying to get over here as well.
