Broken radio? Brroken brain? Hmmmmm... I think blazing down the road with an ipod at full volume playing speed metal, and not giving a fuck, because he has just spent the 46th 12 hour day in a row gandy dancing, with no time off, and didn't hear the radio.
I'll go for the first part of my guess (C), or all of (D). If they knew it was coming, why were people on the track with there backs to the on coming juggernaut? looks like a lot of the people were on the right of way seconds before it showed up, unless folks there have huge balls and this was no big thing(witch I have respect for that).
Thing is, here there are procedures for when a radio breaks, and going flat out down the line is rarely one of them. Now where this happened maybe they don't care.
But if it was signal controlled line and the rail, no matter if it was bent out of gauge, was able to pass comm voltage so the system thought the train vanished when it went off, then the crew not hearing the radio ran on clear signal indication. If it was CTC controlled line, then the dispatchers may be at fault for not noticing the signal reset in the control center, and setting that portion to red after failure to reach the crew by radio or phone. Or something like this.
No matter what, I see many mistakes in this scene, many preventable mistakes.
Hell of a thing though, that M of W Whatever rocket, hits the ties, passes the camera, you can hear it grinding along and it disapears into the dust then WHAMCRUNCH! For a millisecond you think the worst, but then it emerges out the other side still upright and hanging half on the rails, obviously it side swiped the train as it passed, you can see fuel or water spewing out of the side as the guy in the white shirt goes up to check on who was in the cab. I would love to hear what caused it all.
Sooo I work on trains and other stuff...Mmm How do you post these videos and links to this site?? I just got my first mac and Im having some trouble figuring things out. Anyone??
Press on regardless...
