You want equality? Take it. It won't be easy. I know because it isn't easy for men to become equal to other men in lots of situations.
You want respect? Earn it, the same way men have to.
For the record, many moons ago I marched on Washingto DC with a bunch of STRONG women, for women's rights. I'd do it agin with the right group but, it seems lately the only action women are taking for their rights are bitching about them. YES I SAID IT!
How much did you have to fight to "earn" your rights?
Why should blacks have to "take" their rights?
Why should women have to "take" their rights?
Why should ANY group have to "earn" their equality?
*laughs merrily* Good grief, I have to "earn" respect "just like a man has to"?
Please. I've been a volunteer firefighter and I have put my ass on the line for others.
I've worked construction, I've been an exercise rider, I have been in the "man's world" for most of my working life....and I did damn well at it, thank you.
But, if I go into a bar and order a triple rum straight up, I STILL have to send it back two or three times because bartenders don't seem to want to believe that a tiny, 110# woman would REALLY want her booze straight up when she asks for it that way. She MUST mean with water, or on the rocks, or something else.
*rolls her eyes*
How should someone go about "earning respect just like a man has to" other than doing one's job and doing it damn well? *grinz and shakes her head*
Has anyone ever told you that you could not POSSIBLY be able to do any good in XYZ profession because you are a guy and therefore have a penis? If not, well, you are far up on me. I am a very good computer hardware tech, and I have been told numerous times that "you can't know what you are talking about, you're a girl."
Fine buddy....tell me that when your box fries because you got that cheap-ass heat sink and fan when I *told* you that it didn't have the balls to keep your processor from melting.
*chuckles* Pretty much every profession I've entered into has started with the same thing....I couldn't operate a crane because women just don't have the fortitude for it. Huh? Anyone who can play a video game has the strength and stamina to operate a modern crane. It's all buttons and joysticks. Oh yeah, those 12 hour shifts of which 6 hours are spent waiting for SOMEONE to sign off on the papers so I can do the lift are just killer. Sitting in my air conditioned cab playing gameboy and watching my portable DVD player while the site safety inspector ran down a safety manager to get a John Hancock is just grueling. *laughs merrily*
(Don't think operators have the option of "doing something productive" during that wait time. OSHA would have a fit ....and it wouldn't matter if you were male, female or a pink and purple chimpanzee.)
So, won't you please explain to me EXACTLY how one "takes" equality? Because if the Bible-thumping MALE rigger on the site gets up in arms because someone tells a dirty joke around him, everyone just shrugs and makes sure he isn't around if they tell a dirty joke. However, if the woman rigger of the crew gets up in arms because someone tells a dirty joke, then she is accused of being a "feminazi" and "having no sense of humor". From my observations, it doesn't matter if the woman is the best rigger of the crew and the Bible-thumper tends to sit on his ass every 10 minutes because he is having an asthma attack...him having a problem with the joke is fine, but not her.
So, please explain. I'm listening.
"There is a time and a place for ruthlessness. You and I and many others on this board were trained by the government to kill, maim and terrorize people and destroy their property. However, we must always keep in mind that the only appropriate time to do so is when it will benefit multi-national corporations."--Yogi Kuddha
