Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

If that pelican case fits inside the pelican case already on your bike, it seems that any impact great enough to wreck your laptop will be catastrophic to the bike.

Pelican. Indestructable (as much as an Earthly Thing can be indestructable). Watertight too. Just properly set up the foam inserts (nice and snug-like) and you are set. If your Mac gets fragged inside a Pelican case, odds are that nothing would have saved it.

Will the foam in the Pelican case quell the rampant vibration present on the KLR? Vibration will kill your hard-drive and other little bits and pieces inside your lappy if you are not careful. You may have an issue there.

Pelican. I've taken laptops to Antarctica via New Zealand and Chile three times now with nary a glitch. Some of the loading off loading wasn't particularly nice, and they seemed to help with the altitude pressure differential where some LCD screens went pop getting to altitude, and I never worried about weather damage. Kicked, thrown, sat on, never a problem.

If your looking at the pelican bike luggage system, look around as I've heard rumors that while the case itself is great in the application, the mounting racks as subpar.

Look at the RTW folks too...... I wouldn't worry too much about vibes. A good foam rest spot should do the trick.

+1 on pelican

i'm thinking the foam will dampen the vibration. look carefully at which you are ordering...they can have foam or a moulded tray:

PC1080B 1080 Computer Case - Black- 12.3" L x 9.3" W x 1.5" D
PC1080DG 1080 Computer Case - Dark Gray- 12.3" L x 9.3" W x 1.5" D

PC1080CCB 1080 Computer Case - Black- W/Computer Case Liner 12.3" L x 9.3" W x 1.5" D
PC1080CCDG 1080 Computer Case - Dark Grey- W/Computer Case Liner 12.3" L x 9.3" W x 1.5" D

the foam filled ones cost less than the moulded liner ones.

the link you posted is for the moulded-liner version (and is a great price...dealer cost on that is $65.00).

You shouldnt have to worry about the hard drive if its in a padded case like a Pelican. As long as the laptop is off the heads on the hard drive should be parked.

I took my laptop on a 3,500 mile trip and had it in the topbox for tons of commuting without any problems. All I had it in was a neoprene laptop sleeve. I then wrapped it in a sweatshirt to isolate it from vibration.

Back when I had a work issued lappy and fancy Treo phone, I carried both in my jansport backpack. Worked out fine.

Of course, if I'd gone down, the stuff in my backpack was worth more than the bike. I expect that laptop would have worked like armor for my back, though...

Just to clarify here (I haven't seen either of them in person) which one of the ones you posted are you saying would be preferable?.
i'm thinking the one you linked to has the moudled tray, and a basic foam one might be safer.

the more recently posted comment about the heads off the discs when turned off makes good sense to me, and the foam may not be as important as thought.

better pictures can be found here

If you are willing to consider a backpack, you could look into the hard backpacks by Axio. Not as tough as Pelican though.

I got my Pelicans here:
http://www.all-pelican-cases-4-less.com/
Cheapest I could find at the time. YMMV.

I hope you find something you are happy with.

I've had two fancy aluminum Mac laptops, and they've both lived in these: http://www.sfbags.com/products/sleeveca ... ecases.htm

I know you're talking about hard luggage here, but I'm fairly convinced that these particular nylon and neoprene sleeves are solely responsible for my laptops' ongoing existence, so I feel compelled to recommend them as another line of defense in addition to whatever you do for cases. Though I could fill a page with the follies that my 12" Powerbook alone has survived thanks to the sleeve in its six years of service, I'll just mention these three: 1.) Dropped 12' onto concrete. 2.) Tumbled down a flight of stairs. 3.) Traveled via Fed-Ex... twice. (Put the laptop in the sleeve, stuffed the sleeve in a box, wadded a sheet of newspaper in behind.) It's also been stepped on, bashed into things, etc. This is the same laptop whose case bent irreparably and had to be replaced when a friend tripped over the cord and knocked it off an 18" high coffee table, so I think I'm right in giving credit to the sleeve for its continued function.

The new laptop has booked at least 3000 miles on the bike (500 today alone), either stuffed in a bag or crammed into my ammo can cases, and it seems none the worse for the wear from that.

BackDoorBarbie wrote:second thought here, go to the local gun shop, most carry pelican cases (call first to make sure). that way you can walk in and finger fuck the thing to your hearts content and then decide weather you want to order it through them or come home and order the specific size from the internet. all the standard cases are the same they are just scaled differently so check it out, at least you will get a feel for what you would be getting into.
Yes. Check gun shops. Many seem to sell Pelicans cheap. If they have display models, the foam will invariably be fucked up somewhat from people messing with it, so you can sometimes get a few more bucks knocked off.
