I've got a friend who is looking for a deal on a helmet. I've got the one that I had my big crash in (a KBC VR2) that only landed on the visor; there is no damage on the helmet itself.
He wants to buy it from me.
Initially I was cool with it, coz I took the insurance money and got myself a Shoei RF-1000. That was something like, 8 or 9 months ago, though. Now I'm thinking that, not only would I like to keep it for track days, but it's wicked sentimental and packed full of good ju-ju.

What would you do, keep it as a sentimental lump and part time/track day/loaner bucket, or stick to your very distantly previous word and punt it out for fifty odd dollars?

I've got no problem putting it out on loan. Even extended loan. Paying things forward for all of the help and support that I've gotten is cool, too. I'm just really attached to this helmet for some reason.

Loan it--never sell it.

Up until very recently, I had my helmet from my big wipeout of 06.. Kept my jaw attached to my face--now someone else is using it, and I pretty much told him it's his now because it's stretched out and no longer fits, but fits him perfectly.

You keep those things that keep you, but don't profit on something that saved your dumb melon--that's bad bad juju, my friend. Keep it, caress it, and pass it along and ask it to protect others like it protected you.

Then when no one else wants it, mount it on your wall so after you're done letting your grandchildren pul your finger, you'll tell them stories about all the crazy-ass shit you did, including what thast helmet did for you. What grandchild wouldn't want to hear stories of their old grampaw wiping out on motorcycles?

That's originally why I went out and bought the Shoei. It was all a very flurried time, though.
The more I thought about it, however, the more I realize that I basically bought an extra helmet that I didn't need. I really never hit my head in that crash. The damage on the visor is from rolling over and scraping once I was already on the ground, and from what it looks like, there was only one time that I even scraped. The helmet itself is literally pristine aside from one tiny bit of rash on the tip of the little switch that opens the chin vent.
I'm more concerned about the damage that may have been done from the nurse dropping the damned thing on the floor AFTER the crash than the damage from the crash itself.

i agree with RevCBL and the snell foundation.

the way that helmets absorb force in an impact is by deforming. they're not made of memory foam. once this happens they don't spring back. if the EPS inside the helmet is already compressed, its just going to pass the force of the next crash on to your buddy's cranium.

if this is a friend i wouldn't let him ride with a crashed (potentially unsafe) helmet.

I dunno about you, but I generally apply a different standard for myself than I would for others. I'm sure I could convince myself that a helmet was still totally usable for me, but would prefer not to sell it to anybody I know. If you do sell it, sell it with full disclosure to someone you don't know.

If your buddy dies of a head injury, it won't matter whether it was actually due to the helmet or not. It also won't matter if you fully disclosed everything to him. You'd never sleep again.

If you are going to sell a helmet, sell the new one.

Better yet, box up the new one and store it in a safe place so you can use it when the old one is past its lifespan.

I still have my old helmet, the one with blood all over the inside of it. Can't imagine anyone else wanting to wear it. Save it for your kids, they'll wear it around on their bicycles and stuff. Sledding, halloween, all that.

helmet crashed is helmet trashed, even if it still looks good on the oustide.

FWIW, my crash helmet got its chin all scraped up, and on a flip-up, the chin guard technically isn't a chin protector, especially givwn there's no foiam underneath. I wouldn't loan one out that had noggin impact.

That's what I'm saying. Davis sucks, but it's an escapable suck. In an hour or two I can be in some really nice riding, and good scenery, and the bay area, etc.

GG, on the other hand. Man. That guy is just lost in a sea of suckage. Yowsers.

On the flipside, though:
Still, it sucks here. I've got to go an hour or two to get to anything worthwhile. When school kicks in, that hour or two is going to often make any sort of an escape impossible. In SC, escaping for an hour or two was sometimes all I could muster, but those hours were ALL spent on glorious roads or good surf. Once school kicks in, it's gonna get awfully claustrophobic around here.

(But I'm still better off than GG. Sorry GG.)

For about a hundred bucks you could be sure everybody involved has a new helmet. That's damn cheap in my opinion. I would have tossed the thing already.

Keep it for sentimental reasons or personal use.... don't bet your friends brain on a helmet that has been dropped post crash. It just ain't worth the little bit of beer money that you and/or he will spend.

Hold on to it. You dont know if it has any non-visible damage. Plus it was with you during the get off so you have to keep it.

Couple of years ago the insurance company replaced my helmet when I was hit by a cage. I loved the helmet and really liked the graphics so I wanted to keep it as a memento. Unfortunately they refused to let me keep the old gear they were paying to replace. So the helmet probably ended up in the trash somewhere. I still wish I had that helmet.

Yeah, I was supposed to turn in all of my gear too, but they forgot! Rad! Cause I *really* didn't want to give it back. As a matter of fact, I really want a mannequin so I can display it like an art piece.
I still pull the pants out every now and again to look at the chunks of my flesh that are stuck to them.

Yes, Oklahoma sucks, that's not news. Given my druthers, if I could somehow magically transport East Goatfuck to a secluded spot outside of Austin, I'd never want for nothin'.

Put it this way: I've spent well over half my life in Texas. I prefer it there... but my family's here. The music scene in Oklahoma is a joke compared to the music industry in Texas. It's tough to make any money playing music in Oklahoma, all the good musicians here consider it a hobby and have other jobs that actually pay the bills. Or they move to Texas.

Texas may have a lot of rednecks and Jesus freaks, but those people can't hold a candle to the idiots in Oklahoma!

Ya can't really bitch about not getting a deal on a bucket when somebody just did a few hundred dollars of free mechanical to your dead bike, and stored it in their driveway for six months while they waited for you to afford the parts.
