Math geeks and slide rules

OK, so my neighbor recently moved and had an estate sale. She was a retired teacher. She gave me a HUGE wooden sliderule that's about 5 feet long and about a foot wide.
We're gonna hang it on the wall cause it looks so cool.
Does anyone here actually know how it works?
I found a website that explained it, but it made my eyes roll back in my head. Do any of you know the 'cliff notes' version of it? I'm pretty good at math and trig, but this thing stumps me.

You need to find someone at least 60 years old. My dad could use one, but since calculators came into being, he's long ditched it. Funny, a guy he once knew gave him a whole box full of them from a tech school. They were being thrown out.

You NEED to make a giant shirt pocket to display that in!

it would take me a while to remember how to do anything other than simple addition, subraction, multiplcation and division - but of course they can do lots of other stuff.
the linear scale is usually used for add and subtract, the log scale can be used for multiply and divide, but unless you understand logs already it will be confusing as hell.
