I was looking for a pic of the local FD's new heavy mobile crane which I encountered on the motorway the other day, couldn't find it and asked a buddy. He couldn't find it either, but he did come up with this from the volunteer FD's website where they show off their kit:

Yes, it's a waterpump for getting water out of rivers and other open bodies of water for the purpose of putting out fires.
I wonder how much hp they have it producing, obviously they wouldn't run it at the sort of rpm you can get away with on a bike on the road for shorter periods.

EDIT: Found the mfg. Doesn't mention displacement, but does mention double ignition, 68 hp @ 4100 rpm. Picture on the website is of the current BMW GS, makes sense they changed to the new engine when BMW stopped making the old one. So, it stands to reason the previous one was similar, most likely the 1150 I'd think.

Man, how long before some bored firefighter/machinist puts that in a bike frame?

As in a septic pump? Sounds glamorous.

As seen in this biker comic from the early eighties:

Farmer Horst's liquid-manure pumpe had failed and he was very sad. But not to worry. Werner only had to listen till he beheld the sounds of a CX500, pulled it over and voila, problem solved.

Hey, now, this is unfair.
The pump is made by Rosenbauer. You can't blame BMW for the entire ugly.

Here's the current model:

Check it out, they actually made one as far back as the pushrods:
