SF is really one of the places where skateboarding started. What do you think of this?

Kid was stupid to call the cop a dick. Did he over react?

I base every thought on the matter on a starting point of Fuck All Pigs. I've had a lot of run ins with cops, and learned a few things. As a youth, you don't know where to pick your battles, nor when you have a disadvantage. This kid didn't really have the high ground. But nonetheless, the cop is still a douche.
In general, I'll say what I please to pigs. But it's different when you're a kid. As a grown man, cops tend to leave me be, and not get sketchy over an argument. With a kid, they will be bolder, and say shit like "I'll break your arm". But I've found that that shit doesn't happen in my old age, once the pig figures out that I'm not some street thug troublemaker, regardless of appearance. It makes cops feel manlier to threaten kids in front of their friends, methinks. So in short, before you tell a cop to go get fucked, makes sure there's nothing his pig ass can do to you, know about your rights, and have an attorney to drive it all home.

Hmm, yup. Kid was stupid. I don't want to say he got what he deserved, but he can't be surprised either.
But he was right, the cop is a dick--"snap your arm like a twig" Great job Johnny Law, great cop talk for someone who was squirming at best, not resisting.
But he was enforcing a law--skateboarding illegal in SF city and county? Jesus Effing Christ--a really fucking stupid one, but a law. If they were prying something off and got caught, they got caught. Don't get a cop's attention and you can slip between the cracks. Call one a dick, and you're inviting him to be one.
The cop was stupid for getting into a shouting match with the onlookers. A situation like that--no one will change the others' mind--stupid for him to try to debate--non-winnable.

I would agree with priest. As I get older I have no problem walking up to cops, as a matter of fact I previously rolled with The Sentinels, (a nationwide law enforcement biker 'club'.) So having spent a decent amount of time around 'pigs' I have seen some pretty hilarious shit, but as I get older I notice I end up on the cops side when dealing with 'punk ass kids' in general. I have in fact walked up to a cop, got in his face, and told him off. Nothing happened, if I were younger that shit wouldn't have flown at all. I still know that if there is ever an altercation with police involved I am the first one to get cuffed, mostly because they are the most scared of me, even if I am the victim, I get cuffed first. But I know my role, that is big scary guy, everything usually gets sorted out. So, in regards to the cop, he was a douche. Some of them are. Just like every other demographic, some of them are just assholes. Kid seemed like a punk ass too. So when a douche and a punk ass meet dumb will nearly always happen.

A lot of what he said sounded sorta...rehearsed. Like he'd been looking forward to this for quite a while.
He's a douche. The kids are stupid. But kids generally are. I know I was when I was that age. Ah, last week....anyway, the intervening neighbours are stupid, also.
"Do you have a gun? You have a gun and they don't have a gun!"
HE'S A FUCKING COP! YOU'RE NOT IN BRITAIN OR NORWAY!
The cop was right there. "What does that have to do with anything?!"

Cop is a dick.
Kid is a whiny little bitch; pouting with his head in his hands and then calling the cop a dick. I'm sure some of his friends see the video as him sticking it to the man, but to me, he just looks like a whiner.

I can see being fined for skating, but being hauled off to the pokey? thats redonkulous.

No skating = stupid fucking law that shouldn't be enforced.
Cop = dickhead for enforcing aforementioned stupid fucking law
Kid = dumbass for not being able to express himself without resorting to name-calling, especially when dealing with what is obviously a dickhead cop.
Ironically, to me this clearly demonstrates the usefulness of being able to, y'know, speak like an intelligent fucking adult. Not a single person in this video sounds like they have a brain in their head. The kid sounds like a booger-flicking moron, and the cop sounds like a 'roid addled dick (at least the kid got that much right). Whoever's yelling in the background sounds like a whiny fuck.
Remember, boys and girls -- cops are less likely (not guaranteed) to fuck with you if they realize you're intelligent and have an education (i.e., more likely to have resources to get a lawyer, know the law, and make the cop's life difficult in the future if he goes out of bounds). If you really fuck up then they'll bust your balls, but for the most part if you remain professional you'll at least avoid making the situation worse.
Most cops go into the biz because they're control-freaky bullies. Antagonizing them triggers the lizard-stem of their brains. Running from them does the same thing.
That said, if you're confident that you can get away, well...

The cop did not arrest the kid for skateboarding, that was just the charge.
The cop arrested the kid because he got called a name he didn't like.
If you can't handle that kind of pressure (being called a dick by a punk kid) maybe (definately) you shouldn't be a cop.
As far as the gun, if you're going to react that way for being called a name how far away are you from shooting someone, or, whacking them with the night stick, or, as we've seen more and more lately - the tazer?

Cop definitely got in way over his head. He should never have put himself in the position of having to explain himself to a bunch of onlookers. He should only have been explaining his actions in court, not out on the street.
That being said, the kid (I thought I heard his DOB as '86 so depending on when this was shot...?) mouthed off to someone who should be afforded some respect in the first place.
Everyone's guilty in this case of not acting their age.

I think that's a pretty big strech...Cops cant let every skaterdouche call them a dick in front of people, the cop was put into a situation where he had to do something..Maybe he overreacted by threatening to break the kids arm, but he certainly can't say" Oh, you think I'm a dick? Well, I do apologize for that, sir. Do you mind, please, not calling me a name again? It hurts my wittle feewings."
Fuck the skater douche for not being a fucking adult, getting his ticket/warning and moving on to skate somewhere else, and an X on the cops behavior for getting into a pissing match with the onlookers.

That cop needs to do some time in a neighborhood where there are crimes worse than skateboarding, where cops don't go alone, and where the residents carry guns too.

Or maybe, that cop lives/works in a neighborhood where the residents bust balls about kids skateboarding, and if he
doesn't do something about it, his lieutenant is going to bust
his balls about it. Maybe there aren't many shootings in that neighborhood, who the fuck knows. Either way, he's not a fucking detective ( therefore, you know, not paid to solve murders), and the lack of any sort of thought that goes into criticizing police, no matter what, pisses me the fuck off. "teeny dick, steroid injecting, power trippin pig, etc.." all the same bullshit, all thoughtless, and rather disappointing. Maybe, if you went at a cop as a human, not assuming he/she is a douche, they wouldn't arrest your ass. I've seen plenty of people talk themselves into handcuffs when they were going to be let go, and this asshole seems to be from the same litter of mouthbreathers.

My problem with the situation is the cop let his emotions and sensitivities, instead of training and common sense, dictate the action that was taken.
He was dealing with the skaters, until someone called him a dick. The crime of skateboarding did not get the kid arrested, although that was the charge.
Message sent: Skaterboarding, a crime, will only get you a citiation. Calling someone a name, free speech, protected by the constitution, will get you arrested and you will be threatened with bodily harm.

The fact that skateboarding is illegal everywhere in the City and County of San Franscisco is about a stupid as it gets. I can't quite tell if the cop in the video is power tripping or is just sick of nosy neighbors calling in skateboard complaints and little prick kids who don't know when to shut up.
I know a few cops and they generally all have healthy egos, perhaps reinforced by their job. However, I've heard the similar stories of where they're about to give somebody a break after somebody broke some law and then get screamed out, cursed, hit, whatever and then the person in question finds themself in the pokey.

You know I have to deal with kids who push the limits all the time and sometimes you have to remind them exactly where that line is. Was he wrong to threaten to break the kids arm, probably. But if you consider the lack of excessive force he used I think he was just trying to make a point.
I don't know the events that led up to this, but he was responding to a citizen call and complaint. If people thought the kids were vandalizing cars then he had to check it out. If they escalated the problem by mouthing off then that's the lesson they need to learn. Sometimes a rude "Shut the fuck up!" gets the attention that that a "Please" doesn't when someone is being a douche.
Being a cop can be a shit job and hopefully the kids involved learned that treating a public official with any level of disrespect is just a bonehead thing to do.

I agree.
I'm not saying public officials deserve respect, I'm saying it'll get you into trouble becuase they think they deserve respect.
Respect needs to be earned, you don't automatically get it because you put on a uniform.

What would be really telling is if someone could dredge up the "official report" (that the cop was doubtless required to generate after this incident) and then try to match up what the cop *says* in the report vs. the video of actual events.
I suspect that the cop is not only a dick, but a lying, report-falsifying, douchebag, dick.
The thing is, the cop is likely right about one thing, there's plenty of "citizens" who likely complained about the kids being out there having fun with their skateboards, and those same curmudgeons are the ones to blame for cops who behave like that.
We all want the cops to act like that when we find our cars/bikes/whatever on the side of the road after being vandalized by some anonymous children...
...but the *real* problem comes right back to the citizenry who are too busy making money and pumping out children to bother to be anything like a parent to the rug-rats that they have already brought into this world.
...I'm feeling pretty misanthropic today.
...but that cop is *still* a dick.

The cop should have pulled out his gat at the first sign of disrespect and filled that little mouth breather full of holes. He should have then preceded to pistol whip all the bystanders only after sodomizing the mouthy bitch who couldn't mind her own business.

Disrespectful or not, no one should be arrested for exercising their freedom of speech. Yes the kid is stupid but that cop needs to have a thicker skin and consider the source.

It's not about the uniform or even that most public officials deserve respect. My point is that some people have difficult jobs that don't need to be made more difficult. I've seen plenty of people, like that kid, who thought it was acceptable to piss all over people just because they were they were having a bad day and that other person just happened to be there, and that's bullshit.
