What could be funnier than that! As if the PTSD isn't bad enough on its own, he gets to be laughed at for being a sissy about it (as though anyone laughing would have done anything different).

I seriously think Mexico is trying to catch up with Japan though.

I was watching a prank tv-show while sitting inside a school bus eating 99 cent tacos, and they had a "personal trainer" groping a client while she was on the weight machines, and forcing himself on her. After repeatedly telling him to keep his hands off her, she eventually decided to walk out, at which point he embraced her and refused to let her ago (there was nobody else in the gym). I think the woman genuinely thought she was going to be raped.

It's okay, this isn't sexual assault, BECAUSE YOU ARE ON TV!!!

I think this is sort of a "24" scenario. 24 has been pretty popular in Japan. I was asked if I liked the show quite a few times this summer and I think I recall seeing DVDs of it in Akihabara.

Jonny would be much better at a translation, but heres the gist of it.
There's not a lot to translate, or at least nothing that you can't roughly infer. I didn't pick out My Japanese still isn't that great. I can't make out/don't know a lot of those kanji, so even my attempts at translating their subtitles is shoddy at best. (most of these talk/variety shows have subtitles for short skits like this, even for screaming and unspoken actions sounds like the guy banging on the door to get out; "Don, don")

I'm not sure what the dude is talking about when they're sitting together before the shooting starts. The youtube summary says something like phone scammers...

After he gets to the door,
"Let me out (of here/this area)!"

As the guy enters the room theyre talking too fast to pick up and I don't understand the kanji to boot.

After the guy with the pistol and vest on gets to the guy getting pranked he starts dragging him, "This way. Come on." (Roughly)

More yelling...

Then the guy with the guy asks condescendingly, "are they listening to you." or "what did they hear?" I think we'll need Jonny to clear this part up. (not totally clear on what 'deitanda' means in this context)

After he shoots again
theres more indiscernible stuff then asking for forgivness??
"Wait, wait!
Then the guy is trying to explain himself? And denies knowing anything?

The dude with the gun yells for/calls on the radio "Toni" (Tony) and asks him to do something ?? and stuff...

I'm not sure if the Toni guy is someone the dude recognizes, but a lot of the time there is a special host/comedian that instigates stuff like this for their bit of the show.

And then, at the end after he gets what going on he says something like "Lets stop messing around." or "Quit fucking around."
That might be wrong, I might be messing up what my host brother translated that last phrase as. He used it a lot.

Laughter ensues.

The end.

This sort of stuff is pretty par for the course in Japan. Embarrassing people to get an odd reaction never gets old, whether its getting people to do goofy dances, putting them in really awkward situations, generally shaming them, or fake shootings.

Remember the last time you bottled it all up and then acted out, back in the thirties and forties? We don't want a repeat of that, do we?

The guy is literally begging for his life there...he is 100% convinced he will be shot in the head in a moment...his whole life wiped away in a matter of minutes. And they are laughing their asses off.
I don't think this is somehow "evil asians" who don't value human life, I'm pretty sure TV developers have pitched stuff like this in the west, too.
But...come on! They actually put this on the air! And the sickos in the audience laughed!! What the FUCK is wrong with the world???

This is a context thing. This segment was purely aimed at Japanese Comedy/Variety viewers, and an out and out a play on the popularity of the show 24. All the people involved are Japanese T.V. personalities/comedians. The chap receiving the brunt of the prank is a comedian. The others perpetrating the prank (those shooting and those shot) are comedians, hence the laughter from the people watching.

The chap that runs in (another comedian) and grabs the poor sod is meant to be trying to save him from the sniper; it's all very Jack Bauer, 24, etc.

I'm sure he had no idea what was going on and was genuinely pissing his pants. Poor bastard, but in Japan people have to "earn their stripes" as it were: if you put yourself in the entertainment business then you must entertain, and also be prepared for all kinds of (demeaning) shit. WELCOME TO SHOW BUSINESS, BABY!

DerGolgo, I don't think there is anything wrong with Japan per se... no more than anywhere else. The Japanese entertainment industry? Probably has it's faults like every other country's. It just expresses itself differently... maybe...?

Okay. Still. The fact that this sort of thing can go from pitch meeting, scripting, casting, location scouting, pre-production all the way through to actual filming and airing weirds me out in way like nothing has done since the first crop of plastic-surgery shows. Not to mention what sounded like heartfelt laughter...

Oh, I do understand and agree. You don't see so much of this kind of stuff on the telly here, and I was pretty surprised to see the vid you posted. No matter the flavour or set-up, this is reprehensible. After watching a few times after my first post I started to wonder if the whole thing was set-up: being that the "victim" was also in on the gag and just playing along.

When I said context I think I should've added cultural. For example, food is a massive part of TV in Japan. TV personalities will go from town to town, from restaurant to restaurant, eat the food, and completely flip out about how good the food is. For some the response is an enthusiastic "Damn, that's good!", for others it's a screaming "Fucking stab me in the eyeball if I've ever tasted anything quite as amazing as this!!!1!!LOLZ!!!1!!OMFG!!!!!1１！！!!!". Whenever I see people eating food on the telly here, I expect them to say that it tastes great, and to often overplay their enthusiasm. It's the norm.

I think (think) that regular TV viewers are so jaded that they need the over exaggerated response to whatever is going on to give them the happy telly buzz. Maybe this "skit" was an example of producers trying to give something over the top to their viewers. Maybe all the cast were in on it and gave an over the top performance. Maybe the viewers watching and laughing were in on it too, having been desensitized by the outlandishness and madness and seeing people that they recognise doing something crazy again.

Maybe the only person fooled was the poor bastard genuinely fearing for his life, but everyone else was so used to the madness that they missed the sadness and humanity.

This all makes me think of Series 7.
