sun rat is still alive

the effort to stay ahead of the game at school is kicking my ass. i spend all my time studying.
the shitty economy is also kicking my ass. which is ok since due to studying i don't really have time for a job. but i have roommates.
next semester will not be any easier, however it should be just as fun. maybe even moreso, since i will be taking three classes in russian, instead of just two.
i will officially be a double major after this semester: german and russian.

A double foreign language major would kick anyone's ass. You're a brave woman, Sunrat!
Gotta ask this - are you able to think in both languages, yet? How intense is the immersion of your courses?

i will only be done with the first year of russian in december, it IS an intensive course. the next semester will be the second year of russian along with another class in conversation simultaneously. the people who have passed through the russian courses all speak fluently.
the upper level german professor and all her classes = a total bust.
i'll have to work completely on my own(in addition to the coursework in all her classes) to get to the fluency the russian students get from their series of courses.
that said i can think in german part of the time.
i will be graduating in spring of 2012. hopefully with two translation certificates too.

Sorry about the ass-kicking, but I admire you very much for committing to making a change that You want.
Are you and Der G gonna talk in German now so the rest of us sit back and scratch our heads?
It's really good to hear from you!

Ja.

LOL! Thank god for Google Translate, cause I was actually able to follow this thread...even what you said above Jonny
Kudos to you Sun Rat! That's some heavy duty coursework you're undertaking. It's fantastic that you're learning other languages so thoroughly and fluently - something that is so lacking in America is knowledge of how to speak other languages fluently.
What do you want to do with your language mastery when you finish school?

this is the strange thing. the deeper i get in, the more numerous my options are. at this point the choices are all only mildly overwhelming.
with a double BA, at one end of the spectrum lies teaching high school language. at the other end lies the foreign service office. in between those two points are ESL work abroad, contract translation, corporate translation, teaching community college, the peace corps... any of which is fine work to me.
i may be forced to go to grad school just to have stuff narrowed down
for me.

But seriously Sunny--Kraut AND Russki? Goddam. I did that once--seriously. I did German and Russian for three semesters or so--kicked my ass. Russian;'s a trippy language with alll those declensions--you HAVE to drink vodka heavily to make sense of it.
German's not too tough for me, being my first language, and all, but Russian--hoowee!!! Good luck.
Glad you're back--stick with it!

I forgot too much Russki, and I'm too lazy to type in your fucked bastardized greek-backwards latin alphabet, but here's something from the top of my head:
О вы, замужние, о вдовы,
О девки с целкой наотлёт!
Позвольте мне вам наперёд
Сказать о ебле два-три слова.
Ебитесь с толком, аккуратно,
Чем реже ебля, тем приятней,
И боже вас оборони
От беспорядочной ебни!
От необузданной той страсти
Пойдут и горе и напасти,
И не насытит вас тогда
Обыкновенная елда.
Oh yeah, one more thing:
Ёб тебя

Um....je parle un peu francais....?
Seriously though, I'm absolutely astounded by the fluency in language around here. Especially Russian...I don't even know how to pronounce those funny looking symbols.
And I went to a Polish grade school where they didn't teach us any languages...and Polish mass for many years, where I tried desperately to follow the mass book, but couldn't keep up.

the problem with foreign language teaching in the US is that in the aftermath of WWI it was made illegal in about 35 states to teach foreign languages to students before 8th grade. the school systems affected never recovered, even though those laws were eventually overturned by the US supreme court.
your polish grade school was undoubtedly a victim of that, and just never resumed after the laws ended.
i researched it over the summer and found that many country schools as well as northern city schools were actually bilingual, for the purpose of teaching immigrant children english.

Back home they taught us English (I went to "specialized" school) from the first grade, and out "Native" Ukrainian starting in second. In regular schools taught foreign language (German, English or French) starting at 4th grade and they could not put two words together, they started too late and it never rooted in.
