Went to the range today, played around with a few different grips, etc.
Felt pretty good about my improvement:
9mm at 15 yards, first, and fifth magazines
I feel like I'm a decent shot, but don't have anything to really compare myself to.
I'd love to see some pics of some of y'all's target practice under similar conditions and see how we all stack up.
Also- what range is recreational competitive hand gun shooting typically done at?

Nice grouping on the second target!
I shoot at the indoor .22 league (correction: Used to before my gun was stolen) and standard match is 30 rounds at 50 feet, 3 segments: 1 slow fire 10 rounds in 10 minutes, 2 rapid fire: 2x5 rounds in 20 seconds and then 2x5 rounds in 10 seconds, 3 different targets. My best score is around 250, there are people that will score 280 consistently.
9mil is a bit harder to shoot, most develop a flinch in anticipation of the recoil, I did OK with mine but the gun itself sucked, and now it's gone as well...
If I ever make it down to the range I will bring back the target.

I consider myself a pretty good shot. My dad, however: I've seen him nail a gallon milk jug with open sights at 500 yards. He also still has the playing card he shot in half-on edge-at 50 yards with a black powder revolver.

we should totally have a UTMC shoot off!
Pick some standard sized target, scoring, and range, then maybe have categories by caliber, and compare results.
Regional cells could have a range day shindig, maybe a ride in?
Seems like we have enough firearms enthusiasts on this board to pull this off, if there's interest.

I'm down!
I'll be shoot w/ a 9mm Browning Hi-Power for the record of comparison.
Just let me know the specs of what the distance and such challenge are (I'll also be able to compare right and left handed shooting differences).

I love touching off a few rounds. Just one more hobby I can't afford.

I suggest we have a Trap shoot competition, but have not figured out the scoring.... has to be video report?
I have a small arsenal left, but never get to shoot anymore, ammo is cost prohibitive lately.

I think we have enough generous Ootmiks, with iron to share, as long as everyone buys their own ammo and targets.
I'm really curious how Flatline's Five SeVen performs at 15 yards....
what do you guys think about this as a start:
5 mags of 10 rounds at 15 yards, 3 minutes per mag.
I'm open to suggestions for scoring- I'm not sure what standardized targets are available, or how they're tallied.

Only pistols?

My only hand gun left is a 6-shooter .357 that's where it gets a bit complicated with magazines...

ten is an arbitrary round number, a compromise twixt hi cap autos and traditional six shooters. Ten rounds per target.
I'm fine with rifles, too, though don't know that we all have the facilities to actually pull off long range stuff as befitting these weapons. Perhaps we could devise a standardized, smaller target for long rifles? It would have to be at that range...

I can't wait until BDB schools you guys.

I'm fully open to schooling! I don't claim any serious skill, I just think it would be fun to see all our efforts within a given set of parameters.
Actually...
I wonder if we might manifest a variation of this at Ragnarok?

I would have to do it by car, if I did it at all. I'd be on the highway for about two minutes before some paranoid do-gooder called 911 to report a motorcyclist in black with an AR-15 across his back and some sort of "terrorist" patch on his sleeve.
That'd be hilarious.
"But sir, I have to get off the bike first!"
"I said get the fuck down!!"
"But I--"
BLAMBLAMBA BAM!
"Ack! Rosebud..."

I have couple rifles and 200 yd range at the club...

Something like 400 yds would be cool, but not many places like that that I'm aware of.
Around here its either your neighbors field or a gravel pit. I think there's a 100 yd range not far from here, but I don't particularly like strangers sniffing around at my gun. The guy could be a cop or otherwise "concerned citizen," could be someone who knows your car and knows where you live. You never know who they are. So I never frequented clubs or ranges.
200yds is decent, though. A good challenge.
There could be a regional Ootmik shoot or something along the lines of Whiskeywrist's idea. I don't know. I'm tired and talking out my ass right now.

I have absolutely NO doubt BDB will totally school anything that I can pull off - but I'm always working to improve!

3 minutes? Geez... that means I'll have to learn to slow down my fire rate!

If I point my motorcycle at the target it will make a bigger hole.

I like this idea. I've wanted to work on/gain pistol skills. The rifle stuff sounds fun too, even though I don't have anything larger than my .22 Browning A-Bolt which wouldn't really work for that.
As for the pistol competition, a better number would be six or five round increments. Those of us with single stack autos and revolvers would have less of a problem with reloading and breaking up a session.

Is the pistol shoot braced or standing?
I am planning a range day with pistol and rifle at Cherry Creek sometime in the very near future- I'll post target pics.
Pistol: Mil-Spec 1911, .45 ACP
Rifle: Interarms action, 7X57 Mauser

Watching BDB shoot...I don't know whether to be turned on or terrified? Maybe mostly relieved that it's a target and not me.
