Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

Some unpleasant miscreant was firing incessant database queries at our server, which forced the Legal Department of our hosting company, via their Abuse subdivision, to shut us down. No I have none.
All I can do it button the hatches, and tighten up a few things. Such as time limits on how long you may take to compose a post and hit Debauch! As of 24/01/10, I've set that at 30 minutes for now.

To restrict further overloads, any unregistered users had to be locked out.

By forcing anyone who wants in to Log In.

Yes. But there's only so much the Administerrerrerr can do to keep this place running.

I have a very nice mental image now of a boot attached to one of the road-wheels, helplessly turning and being slowly mangled, the suspension traveling a wee bit whenever the part of the boot that goes under the wheel passes between wheel and track...
If there were absolutely anything to be afraid of, don't you think I would have worn pants?

I'll lend you the money, if you'll take care of a few things for me with it. A few years ago, I saw footage of someone in a surplus tank going down a public street, running over a bunch of parked cars with a mess of cop cars encircling him, but unable to do anything. In the end, I think he hung it up on it's belly pan with both tracks spinning. He probably had a hard time finding a lawyer to represent him in that case.

IIRC, it wasn't surplus. The guy was a nut job who somehow got away with stealing the tank off a base.

Shawn Nelson was the guy who stole the M60 and went on a rampage in San Diego before he got hung up and the police shot him. Marvin Heemeyer was the guy who built an armor plated bull dozer and flattened a bunch of stuff in Granby.

Been a while since I went through there, 2 maybe 3 years, but at the time there were still buildings there that looked half dozed.

The thing is, who out there CAN'T relate to Marvin Heemeyer?
I'm not sure I've ever met someone who's never wanted to go and bulldoze a bunch of shit after getting fucked over by someone, ESPECIALLY the government.
Maybe he was a nutjob, and maybe getting fucked over was more in his head than he would've liked to believe, but the fact that he did what he did, and went out of his way to make sure no one got hurt in the process, well... Part of me has got to hand it to the guy.
