So I guess burning ants with a magnifying-glass doesn't rate high-speed photography and a clip on youtube?

...or is this some new sort of alternative to the UV bug-zappers to install on the north 40?

Dude, killing mosquitoes is a moral imperative.

I so fuckin' want one. I do. I want to set up huge automated anti-mosquito arrays on my back porch, and sit outside smoking cigars watching the little bloodsuckers die.

Heh. How come nobody makes mosquito snuff porn? "Shake that mosquito! Shake that mosquito, baby!"

heh. I just read about those guys, Intellectual Ventures, in the book Superfreakanomics. Not only have they figured out how to hunt skeeters, but they have invented a way to reverse global warming in 3 years with as little as 3 billion dollars or so.

Pretty interesting group of folks. And check that book out if you're into digging into topics from odd angles...

Doooood, I SO want one of those.
I'm out working in the garage right now, and the little bastards are in full effect. I've killed dozens of them in the past day and a half.

I was just talking about my personal double standard regarding killing of said animals earlier tonight.

Sure, but think of it this way:

1) You actually deal with mosquitoes on a much more regular basis, and so they're more an actual annoyance than a real one. Easier to hate mosquitoes.

2) Bears are way closer to us on the food chain -- it's easy to pretend that the mosquitoes aren't really "critters," that they're somehow mobile vampiric plants.

A dead bear just reminds us that we're mortal.

3) I read somewhere (and it sounds quite reasonable) that mosquitoes have killed more humans than all the wars on earth via malaria and blood-borne diseases.

So fuck mosquitoes. With fire.

Is there an upside to mosquitoes or those other hated vermin ticks?
Do they do any good or just serve as highly efficient pathogen transfer units?
Around here we have Lyme Disease carried by ticks, and I know two people that had had their lives changed drastically due to Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Granted these are all tick carried.
West Nile is showing up more often here in middle America, so the mosquitoes have to go as well.

Jeager, let me know when you get yours done, I want one too!

Ames, thanks for the reminder. Need to drag that one out and make the kids watch it.

I still don't understand why they walk on them with machine guns in starship troopers.
