stay in a large group, don't go south (Mindanao), stay away from the Sulu sea unless you're with a tour.

I've spent some time there, in Manilla, on Mindanao (Davao City) and on Cebu.
Conversation when I got off the plane in Manilla:
"Hello Sir, first time in Manilla?"
"Yes"
"Will you be staying in Manilla?"
"Manilla City, yes, then on to Mindanao and Cebu."
"Mindanao? oh, you don't want to go there sir. Bad place. Where on Mindanao?"
"Davao"
"Oh...(really long gulping pause) Sir, you don't want to go to Davao. Very, very bad. You bodyguard?"
"No"
Hands me back my passport and looks at me like I'm a corpse.
"Sir, be careful. I hope you enjoy your stay"
And that was 12 years ago when Mindanao wasn't under constant threat from Islamic militia groups like it is now. It's the wild west with M4s and AKs.
On the other hand, given the chance to drive there, you should. Its insane, especially around Manilla International. For a laugh, ask your driver to explain the traffic concept of "counter flow".
