All sorts of airline execs are running around, screaming about the no-fly orders being due to a bad computer-model, there's no danger, look, we have carried out testflights, there is not danger!
Niki Lauda himself took one of his Airbuses up and reported he only saw blue skies and didn't smell any ash.

There's supposed to be a proper scientific survey flight tomorrow - but they don't have flight permission yet

Personally, I don't really mind. The meteorologists say the lack of air traffic has the exact same effect as it did in the USA on 9-12-2001, warmer days and cooler nights. Cool nights I've gotten used to, but the warmer days are sure nice.

I'm tired of all the human interest stories on the "news" that have some travesty about the people stuck in a European airport. I'm sure that if these whining people just relaxed a little bit, they'd leave the fucking airpoirt and go check out the town or something, instead of martyring themselves. The next big story in the news will be that all these babies will be getting back on airplanes, so they'll know when to go back to the airport to resume suffering.

I don't watch much tv so I can't comment on the stories you're seeing, but getting stranded somewhere, especially in a foreign country, can be a pretty stressful experience.

I don't think it is because of bad computer models? Are they talking about atmostpheric computer models?

On friday I found ash observations up to 30k feet. I did it. The fotos the Rolly posted are seriously cool shit.

From what I heard on the news (no actually it was the gf, I don't watch news, I'm not fan of dead people) (except zombie strippers) volcanic ashes can scrap the paint off a plane and jam the jet engines, as observed on a Boeing a few years ago.
After being unable to sustain a certain level of altitude with all engine working, they analysed the dust in the the turbines and and it appeared to be volcanic dust.
this and the paint was gone.
I guess it's enough to strap all planes down in nowadays society and force all those poor people to spend more time in sunny tourist areas.

Niki Lauda himself piloted one of his A-320s to the forbidden altitudes and declared "We saw no ash! The was only blue skies! We didn't smell any either, you'd smell ash!", to paraphrase (no, he really talked about the smell though. Doesn't cockpit air get recycled like the rest?!).

Now, NATO announced that, literally, "Someone flew the plane and it had glass in the engine." and now NATO is canceling all manner of flying. It was an F-16, apparently, but the NATO brass don't want to admit or deny that it was an American plane.
The guy did, however, admit: "You can fly, but it is dangerous." And that the collection of glass in the engine was "a very, very dangerous matter that could, in a not to distant future, have real consequences for our military capabilities".
Sooo....whoever came up with "Weather as a Force Multiplier: Owning the Weather in 2025" for the Air Force is probably creaming their pants right now and crunching some numbers on melting convenient mountains...

Well, on the flight that was the first time we really found out about the effect of volcano ash on airplanes, British Airways Flight 9, they reported smelling sulphur and I think visible 'smoke' in the cabin before the engines went out. I wouldn't bet thousands of air travellers' lives on Niki Lauda's nose though. The thing is you probably wouldn't know you were flying in dangerous concentrations of ash until it was too late, if I understand correctly.

Lauda Air says that "safety is our business" is their slogan (they also say that several other things are their slogan, they don't really seem too sure about it). Yeah. Let me just make a mental note to avoid flying with them in the future.

If this had happpened last summer when my family was in Germany, I don't want to think about the headaches these cancellations would have caused. With 4 kids and my mom in a wheel chair, no hotel reservations, my dad is retired, but 4 of the 5 other adults had to be at work the day after we were supposed to arrive home. And with us broke at the end of the trip compounded with the shitty exchange rate between the dollar and euro ($3 for €2)? Yeah, I'd be somewhat chagrined.
