my grandmother, the woman who raised me, is in the hospital. and it's not looking good. she's got fluid around her lungs, and they don't know why. they're doing an ecg on her heart sometime this morning which will give us an idea whether we need to file her DNR and talk to hospice, or just be patient.
my grandfather is doing "ok". but i know how this is going to go down if gran doesn't get better. my sister is in denial so i was talking to her about him going to assisted living out here. that won't happen, not in reality.
these are the people who raised me and now i don't think they will be around to see me "walk". i don't think they will see the end of may.
i'm a little bit of a wreck, and finals are next week.

I'm sure they can make her all better, at least get her stable, drain fluids, etc.

Hang in there, focus on your finals and think about what good news it'll be to tell her how well you did.

thank you for all your kind words.
the testing is all done but there is no clue when the doctor will speak to us concerning his interpretation of the results.
my sister, an lvn, got all ecstatic about one number from the tests that she was able to pry from the nurse. but i am far more cautious. CHF is only one of any number of things that could be fatally wrong. my gran is 87 after all.
i also realize that time spent around my sister is time dragged along on her emotional rollercoaster ride. i need a beer.
but instead i'm going to finish my lit paper, due tomorrow.

What he said! Focus on the task at hand, there's nothing you can do for grandma's fluid level right now.
(crosses fingers)

That is tough.
I'm sorry to hear of your troubles.
I hope things will be O.K. There's nothing you can do about her, but you can do your usual ossum job at your studies!
I wish you and yours the best!

You are a good person. In some way our teachers live on thru us, and into the ones we raise as well. They have to know what you are and be proud of you. That is one of the greatest gifts one human can give another. I pray for peace for you and your family.

well, the news is in.
to make a long story short: what should have been just a simple bit of fixing dehydration became far more complicated when the ER didn't send up the rest of her medical history. so she was basically off some very necessary stuff which then threw everything out of whack.
now she just has to rest, let her body respond to re-hydration, and the fluid around the lungs problem should go away on its own(they are periodically draining it, in the meantime).
sorry for being so panicky.
i need a beer.

That's good news, Sunrat! Get some much-needed rest, kill your tests, then enjoy a good beer!
