Predators=meh

Saw it tonight, and it was about what I expected from the previews and lack of buzz. An occasional gee whiz cool effect, characters and plot were thinner than the norm as of late with the franchise. If you've got a heavy geek for the predator stuff then I'd say rent it. If not, then don't even bother.

Eh, it was... interesting, but predictable.
It was... interesting to see Adrien Brody play a tough guy, you could tell he was having fun.
Larry Fishburne is getting pretty doughy in his middle years, but he turned in an... interesting performance.
Topher Grace should've had more funny lines, his delivery of "five o'clock is bitch-rapin' time" showed a little of the comedic potential, but Walton Goggins' "Die, space faggot!" actually made me lol.

Geeze, I had no idea this had even been in production. It just happens that I randomly found the beginning of AVP Requiem on cable while sorting socks last night (the unbelievable excitement of bachelor w/ kids mode when Mrs. Toonce is away for a few days) and the degree to which the franchise had been played out with that movie was on the order of 'The Land Before Time 17, The Time Of The Journey To The Quest For The Great, Giving Lava Valley Island'. I did watch it all the way through just because the last few times I have tried to watch it my attention would always wander and I'd miss a bunch of people dying in different ways. I was surprised that the babies in the hospital nursery weren't shown being nommed like so many spilled M&Ms.
The main weakness of that movie was that you knew the single Predator could not die until the very end, if at all. Everyone else was prone to be killed at any time. Kinda like watching Anakin win the pod race. Orly!

I mostly skip movies like this now, as they are like watching some old alcoholic get a kidney transplant. I've met and known so many low budget film makers that could do amazing things with a real budget, and read so much sci-fi that could make for amazing film adaptations... movies like this just seem like throwing away potential.
On the other hand, most of these film makers that I know wouldn't Michael Bay their script to allow for mass product placement, or dumb down the story to appeal to the average zombie IQ moviegoer, or replace the real meat of the the story with "lets shoot stuff and say tough guy one-liners" crap. Don't get me wrong, when brain candy movies like this are done proper they are awesome, but when done badly or even half-assed I want my two hours back and a flash from one of the MIB pens.
One disclaimer: if Verhoven directs it, it will be pure awesome. Even if it's Aliens vs. Predator vs. Batman vs. The Muppets vs. Ralph Nader. Verhoven kicks ass and it's sacrilege that his work gets censored in any way.

Cars 2, The green lantern, x-men 4(first class), the hangover 2, kung fu panda 2, scream 4, Captain America: The First Avenger, spy kids 4, underworld 4, marvin the martian, Poltergeist (remake), Puss in boots (shrek), happy feet 2, footloose (remake), A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas, spider man 4, The Avengers (all marvel characters), Ramona and Beezus, and on and on and on...
maybe it's time to go back to books...

... and remaking Footloose? Would anyone even believe that a small midwestern town would outlaw dancing and rock and roll anymore? Newsflash, methheads don't like slow country music and they dance even in total silence

Ugh, I feel dirty after having read that list.
FWIW I saw Toy Story 3 (in 3d no less) and really enjoyed it. To that end, although
Cars wasn't the best that Pixar has offered, I'll see anything they put out, including a sequel. And the 3D in TS 3 was pretty cool, in that it wasn't the gimmickey "Oh my doG it's like its coming right at me..." kind of effect, but rather that it allowed you to see into the screen. So again, I got no problem with 3D applied thusly.

The Expendables looks like it's worth seeing! Even if it totally sucks it'll be cool to see that many action movie heavy hitters all sucking together.

There is this thing, bit of a construct really, made up of a series of tubes (let me be clear that it is not a big truck) called the internet...
And on the internet you can find what the kids are calling a bit torrent...
Then just add the narcotics and/or alcohol...
