I remember as a kid building Estes rocket kits, in their catalog they had one with a camera in it. At the time that was pretty cutting edge.
It wasn't long before we figured out how to turn them into warhead-carrying missiles and the like. I know a guy who, with his friend, had launched a pet gerbil into near-orbit several times with model rocket kits. They gave the critter a helmet made out of a ping-pong ball, which sadly didn't help much on his last flight when the parachute failed to deploy.

90,000 feet though, that's pretty amazing.
