Everyone on my WiFi network just crapped their pants and they don't know why!

For me it's not so much a fear thing as a respect for the hazards of the gig. Gotta keep your head in the game, much like riding.

As for the pay, it depends on who you're working for. It's pretty common for an outfit to consist of one or two guys working for themselves. 10-18k is a realistic bid for a job, depending on the work. Operating expenses can take a good sized bite out of the take home though.

It's the free climb that freaks me out. I mean it would still be nerve wracking to be up 1700 feet on a pole, even tied in, but at least it would be doable. (Though certainly not something I'm really anxious to try, EVER.)

The funny part about that statement is that I plan on jumping out of a perfectly good airplane from ten times that height, as soon as I can get it arranged.

I used to climb telephone poles for a living, back when I was a cable guy.

I don't miss it.

Tower height definitely plays into the bid process. IIRC our rate for a light change back when I was working the big towers was something like $3.50/ft. So for a 2k' tower like the one in the video we'd get ~$7k, maybe a bit less with the elevator, for a couple hours work. That's changing out 10 large beacons and 10 sets of side lights.
