Just imagine anything hanging low beneath the train, like an improperly affixed pneumatic line, or branch that was being dragged along...I guess the railroading brethren can think of a few dozen things that could have killed him.
Or am I totally misinformed and this kind of thing is actually fairly safe?

The train isn't making enough noise. He should have been seen, and you would hear a lot more horn, and screaming brakes. Drivers do look out for these things, it's fairly common for people to try to commit suicide on the tracks or play chicken with trains.

It doesn't look right to me when the train passes over him, the scale looks off. It's low quality footage, so it's hard to say, but he would have to very thin, the rails are only about 6 inches high and he looks to be mostly under the tops of them.

Even if it was somehow safe, don't do this. I once sat pretty close to the tracks as a train passed at night (I was tripping. Intense). In under an hour every cop in town was out combing the fields for my dead body. Oops.

Two girls were run over by a train not too long ago around here somewhere. They were teenagers, playing hookey I think, and sunbathing (no, it's true) on a railroad trestle. They fell asleep in the sun and whammo, one girl died and the other has no legs but survived.

If I was informed correctly as a child, trains are designed so a person could lay underneath them in a pinch, and not get run over.
Still not a bright idea or safe by any stretch of the imagination, but if everything goes to plan, yeah, the average girth human being could easily do this very same thing.

That being said, I do know a person without legs from a train hopping accident.

A railroad may not place or continue in service a car, if:

(a) Any portion of the car body, truck, or their appurtenances (except wheels) has less than a 21/2 inch clearance from the top of rail;

Most rails range from 6 1/4" to 7 5/16" in height.

So yeah, it's doable, but highly ill advised.

Has anyone else gone trestling? We used to do it on a short RR trestle over the Brazos river back in college. Loud and oily is the best way to describe it. Like, most definitely contributed to my tinnitus loud. My wife had never heard of it and says I'm full of shit. But I did it, I remember it vividly.

I don't have nearly enough dicks to adequately express the amount of FUCK THIS! What the hell? If you're going to be this risky just go get a ten dollar Charm City hooker... at least then you can feel the sides and have the satisfaction of hearing someone else scream. That guy is typical of stupid fucking kids that should die doing this. Do you think he cared to think about the crew on that train? The total panic you feel knowing you might be killing a human being in a matter of seconds and not being able to do a damn thing about it. Its why you hear the screaming brakes, and his lame ass beating feet out of there because he has low integrity, I know these situations, I have walked back, some times quite a distance on un level crushed rock to find the ass wipe is hiding somewhere having a laugh. Often when this happens genuine fear for a life turns to all out rage, because your the stranger that got fucked in the ass by some creep that has not witnessed what a train can do to living tissue and bone, and then there is the delay of train, freight its usually an hour witch can fuck you out of reaching your terminal, and then you spend extra hours sitting in the cab you just worked for 12 hours to wait for a relief crew to bring the train in, and If its a busy line it delays many trains, costing a lot.



Back in the day before I got on the railroad they would see people on the right of way in bad spots on bridges and maybe slow a bit after alerting the conductor in the caboose, and if they looked back and your dumb ass was still there, highball it down the line, now we have to stop and walk back from the head end, and freights commonly run over a mile in length.


It is true about clearance, locomotives have bad clearance for these stunts, we have to adjust the pilot plates and or snow plows regularly when shimming or re springing them, and maximum is 3 inches above rail, you should see the scrape marks on the bottom of the traction motor cases. Freight cars often have low hanging brake beams that would split your head open.


If I ever cought any body doing this on my runs Id beat them with a brake hose wrench (I never go back unarmed) all the while screaming this info so as to make them shit them self, so they and their stupid friends would never go near tracks again.

NOTE: This was in europe some where, likely eastern. They may have better clearance as the trains are much lighter, and note the cement ties witch have a lower center than wood.


I remember one of my friends ran over a drunk sleeping in a roll of cardboard, and they were only going 25mph so they got stopped pretty quick, they went back expecting to see the shit is fucking gross show to find the guy crawling out from under and walking off! They stopped him to see if he was ok, and he was pissed they ran over him!! He was banged up but ok.
