So they are mad because a cop used the word "sluts" and they retaliate by branding themselves as sluts. With all the fucked up shit going on it the world right now the most important thing they can find to take a stand against is getting practical advice?

Maybe they should have called it the "Dumb Hoes With Nothing Better To Do March" instead.

Yeah, protesting that they should be able to dress however they want without fear of attack isn't going to stop the people who are broken enough to view a mode of dress as an invitation to such an attack.

I'm reminded of a gal I worked with for awhile who was considering a sex change. She was a vocal advocate for the elimination of gender specific pronouns. I pointed out to her that such distinctions were important when a doctor is determining weather you need a prostate exam or a pap smear. She just got pissed off and called me an entitled white male.

No, they're angry because an officer speaking on behalf of the police force said that when a woman is raped, it's her fault because she's a slut. Bring on the fucking hijabs, because now the police are saying the same thing as ultra-orthodox Muslim clerics, that women need to cower in hiding from men because we can't control ourselves.

Was that his exact quote or an interpretation of it? I must have missed the part where they said the cop said that "it was their fault because she's a slut". Could you also intemperate what he said as women would be less likely to be raped if they avoid dressing like a hooker?

Is this really a case of discrimination or people just trying to make themselves feel special by exaggerating what someone said and protesting against it?

Hey I'm all for women parading half naked around town and I support people standing up for their rights but I don't see this as one of those times.

I mean really, they asked the cops to come talk to a group and one cop told them that they are less likely to be the target of a psychopath if they wear don't dress like a street-walker and they see this as oppression form the police? If I had a teenage daughter I would be giving her the same advise, I would also be teaching her to kick a guy's testicles halfway up his spine.

A lot of rapes go unreported, because of the horrible shame felt by the victims, their sense of self can be totally shattered. So now you have the police saying that, at least some of the time, if you were raped it was your fault for being a slut.

Does it seem like an overreaction? Maybe it is, but never having had to fear rape or wonder if there was any help I'm not really in a position to judge.

Also, where does this idea that "dressing like a hooker" increases the risk of rape come from? Is there any actual data behind that or is it an assumption? I know at least one woman who was raped that dressed fairly conservatively, and I know that a few people told her that she had been asking for it, and a few more said she made the whole thing up.

That was my assumption, I have to admit after doing a little research it looks like the statistics do not support it but I have to say I haven't givin it much thought before and I can't say that I understand how a rapist thinks either.

I think it is absurd for women to walk around half naked in a parade as a protest against a cop who said something stupid, but only because I don't think that there is anything wrong with women walking around half nekkid in general. In a perfect world they would need to get entirely nekkid to protest... hmm... in a perfect world all the women would already be naked tho. Conundrum!

Seriously tho, people should be able to wear what they want/don't want without the fear that some meathead is going to rape/beat up/bully/kill them. Really how jacked up is our society that we have people running around still acting like civilization never happened?

There are a dozen things the cop could have said that would have actually been helpful, because like Chuck said, we don't know what goes through the brain of a rapist. It's possible that rapists prefer women on laundry day, or wearing a clown suit. Women who refuse to dress provocatively because they might get raped could even be said to have a false sense of security. It's like wearing a bullet proof vest and thinking getting shot won't hurt. If the cop wanted to help he would tell women there's almost no chance of a cop being around if they are getting raped and they should take self defense courses. Of course it's possible he did give a bunch of helpful advice and everyone just latched on to one thing he said, but the news would never give the relevant information.

I am all for Boobquakes, slut parades and waxing their vaginas and donating the hair so kids with cancer can get wigs! Besides, it's a lot more interesting to look at than the Teamsters.
