I had a watch similar to that once. The bezel has what basically amounts to a slide rule. It's incredibly useful for doing time/speed/distance calculations, etc, allowing you to reference things without consulting a chart for all the information.
If the watch keeps very accurate time you wouldn't have to do a daily correction with a chronometer for celestial observations, either.
I suspect this Breitling goes for north of $1200, so if it does anything well, it should keep good time.
