Fans at a recent right-wing extremist rock festival in Germany thought they were getting free T-shirts that reflected their nationalistic worldview. But after the garment's first wash they discovered otherwise. The original image rinsed away to reveal a hidden message from an activist group.

With a skull-and-crossbones logo and the message "Hardcore Rebels - National and Free," some 250 black T-shirts given away at a recent right-wing extremist rock festival were quickly snapped up. But there was more to the tough-looking image than met the eye.

Once the rightist rockers washed their new shirts, they were dismayed to find an entirely different message: "If your T-shirt can do it, so can you. We'll help to free you from right-wing extremism." The offer, complete with contact information, came from a group called Exit Deutschland, which helps people get out of the neo-Nazi scene.

The group sent their "Trojan T-shirts," disguised as a donation from an anonymous party supporter, to the organizers of the Aug. 6 event, which took place in the Thuringian city of Gera and was sponsored by the right-wing extremist NPD party. Exit Deutschland has been pleased with discussion the initiative prompted in online neo-Nazi forums, co-founder Bernd Wagner told daily Süddeutsche Zeitung on Wednesday.

"Why didn't we think of that?" one forum member reportedly asked.

Still, the initiative to outwit the neo-Nazis is unlikely to prompt immediate re-evaluation of their values, Wagner said. "But our name will be stored in their minds. And when they consider leaving the scene at some point, they will remember us," he told the paper. The group's main goal was to reach young right-wing extremists "in a situation where they would hopefully be alone at home."

A marketing expert in Hamburg, who wished to remain anonymous, came up with the idea together with his colleagues, the paper reported. His firm paid for the T-shirts to be printed.

Exit Deutschland was founded in 2000 by Wagner, a criminologist, together with Ingo Hasselbach, a former neo-Nazi leader. According to the group's estimates, they have helped some 400 right-wing extremists to escape the scene.

Well, that's clever.

I mean, really.

There is no end of the mind-fuckery that can be done with this, and I'm very, very pleased that this new and exciting piece of guerilla marketing, which we will certainly soon be tired off, was pioneered not by Apple or Sony or Coca-Cola or some political party but an actual worthy group.

I expect that, soon enough, wash-and-reveal shirts will soon appear at many rock festivals, eventually in stores...you buy a new Fruit-of-the-Loom shirt and, if you're lucky, you get the one in a million with a winning code hidden underneath the big print, just so you rush home and immediately wash the fuck out of it.

same thing happened to me when I washed one of Rolly's shirts. It said something like "Stop Fighting the Gangster Frankenstein Earphone Radio Slavery Big Brother Conspiracy and buy a Prius"

I'm beginning to wonder about my "Nuke and Rave" shirt, now...

...That just never seemed quite right.

My dad got couple tees for my son that have have the pirates appear on one and monkeys on the other when hey are exposed to sunlight, back indoors images quickly disappear.

Was thinking that could be an uber-prank for some protest, when the shirts look fine indoors and once the crowds gather in the sunlight they all have something different appear on the back.

I haven't been in a dance club in years, but I remember thinking it was so funny to get people under blacklight and see how much white lint was on their black shirt.

I'm sure something fun could be done in blacklight.

I ran across some french cop show or something where a detective is being a jerk and the csi tech turns his magic blacklight on him and says "you've got piss on your shoes"

…

So, the t-shirt thing is neat, but I wonder who it is they're actually for. Like, will any nazifucks on seeing the shirt's new message decide to reevaluate their position, or just think "godammit, those niggerloving jewfags have done it again! The racewar can't happen soon enough!" Not that I give 0.5 fucks what the penisheads think of course, but if they're not the actual audience of the message it's then just preaching to the converted. Maybe I am too cynical though.

my daughter thought this would be awesome for those kids who have to wear plain white shirts to school as part of a school uniform...

Hmm, you think I could sell a few of those UV ink shirts to high school students? Now only need to figure out what and how and I guess make your kid a partner since it's her idea!

I like what Exit Deutschland did, that's good stuff!

Years ago we wanted to print up shirts that looked like the traditional bad 80's album cover type motorcycle motif that said "100% American" on the back. But add the UV ink so the word "Express" would pop out in the sun. Then give them to all of the RUBs.

I miss your old shirt Rolly!
