My barrel got da stink!!! (not a euphemism)

So years ago, some friends got me a barrel from the Jack Daniel's distillery. It's damn cool, and has served as furniture in my man-cave (before a kid), in my garage (after the kid), and even on my deck one summer.
This last one seems to be the problem, as it soaked up some rain, and no matter how dry I get it, the thing just reeks now.
Any advice whatsoever on how to save it without cutting it open?

Try filling it with (cheap, probably denatured) alcohol and let it sit for a few days/weeks?

Font color: To clarify: a full size 50+ gallon barrel. I don't know how much the denatured alcohol would be, but even if affordable, I don't think I want that much in one place for flammability reasons.

Couple gallons of bleach, 48 gallons of water, let it sit a few days.

Febreze?
Burn some wood and let it hang in the smoke?
Could be mould, maybe?
I'd let a furniture restorer give it a smell, they tend to know all about weird shit wood does.

I'm w/ gg on this. But I wouldn't use more than several ounces of chlorine bleach. Let stand for a couple hours until the bleach gasses off and dump it out. The trick is to get it dry again and keep it dry.
