I wonder if someone just messed up defining the speed of light.

I'm not going to think about that too hard until it's proven. Otherwise it would be a miserable headache for nothing... I dunno about y'all, but my head hurts just thinking about the speed of light (SOL) thing... but faster? And what the implications might be...? Noooo no. I have enough trouble with all that quantum shit as is.

(And on a similarly reality-stretching story that I do not intend as a threadjack, but... )

Maybe they forgot to take into account that we are already moving at the speed of light as the universe expands away from (or into) itself?*

That won't be it. This is mind-smashingly difficult to get one's head around, but the speed of light is constant in all frames of reference. What that means is if you and I set off in opposite directions, going at almost the speed of light, we would NOT appear to each other to be moving apart at faster than the speed of light, and indeed, we wouldn't be.
