When I was in eastern Africa I saw guys that sailed dhows from the mainland to Zanzibar loaded with cement and bricks and shit and they unloaded all that stuff by hand. They were white with cement dust, some of them. I can only assume they loaded it onto the boats as well.

Sure. Impressive as it is, I can't help to think that it would take half an hour to build some lifting device or invest in a wheel barrow to boost up production and avoid being a little old man at 16, but different places different philosophy I guess.
