SL5x5 workout.

So in exercise land, it's always been kinda tough for me to put on muscle. My genetics leave me prone to being what is scientifically known as "a lanky motherfucker."
It's gotten better with YEARS AND YEARS AND YEARS of semi-consistent weight training, but really the weight training I've done has only taken me as far as not feeling like I'm gonna hurt myself while weight training.

The other day, I was searching around to verify that I was giving my [FUCKING SUPER AMAZINGLY BADASS] girlfriend accurate info about proper dead lift grips, and I stumbled onto this website called stronglifts.com. As with most muscle building websites, there is a fair (large) amount of insecure meat-head bullshit, but what grabbed me about the deal was the history, intensity, and simplicity of the workout program they were touting.

Basically, it's what Reg Park and Arnold Schwarzenegger used back in the day, only I'm doing the more beginner's oriented version that's gonna go like this:

5x5 Workout A 5x5 Workout B
Squat 5x5 Squat 5x5
Bench Press 5x5 Overhead Press 5x5
Barbell Rows 5x5 Deadlift 1x5

Five sets, five reps each. Workout every other day, alternate between workouts A and B, and add five pounds to each lift every day you do it.
Gonna do this until June or July and see what happens. If I get bored or feel like working harder, I'll pick another one of the old school, classic compound lifts and throw it in there as well. Basically, if it is something that uses a ton of different muscles, and makes me feel like I've just been hit by a truck at the end of a set, I'll think about adding it.

It'll be an experiment of sorts...
SCIENCE!

Because really, all in all, I doubt I'm ever gonna get huge in any way, but if I do get anywhere close, I'd much rather look like an old school strongman from the sixties than a juiced out gym bunny.
Even body builders back then, while ginormous, still looked like human beings, and kinda badass ones at that. Nowadays I see 'em and I'm like "Whoa damn, you worked that hard to look that weird?"

Reg Park? Isn't that Elton John's real name?

edit- I would advise against doing squats as low as pictured, bad for the kneebones.
edit edit- I too, wonder why some guys look so damned out of proportion.
Recently I saw a man who, while being a normal sized human being, looked like he could punch a hole through a brick wall. Turned out he's a karate instructor, his hands and forearms looked absolutely superhuman. Kinda the opposite of the puffed up and soft looking, "Jersey Shore" type dudes.

5BX
The 5BX (Five Basic Exercises) Plan is an exercise program developed for the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF)

Throughout the charts and levels, the five exercises are the same, but more difficult variations are introduced:
1.Stretching
2.Sit-up
3.Back extension
4.Push-up
5.Running in place

A walk or run may be substituted for the final exercise; the distances to be covered and the time to be taken are also specified in the plan.

When I started reading the post, I immediately thought to myself, "how many replies until we get a "smoke your balls" reference.

Protein. Eat lots of it.
Good luck. I have found that one of the most important muscle groups you should build is your grip/hands/forearms. Let's face it, you use your hands in just about everything you do, especially when it comes to weight lifting, and you should make a deliberate effort to strengthen your hands as much as possible.

Yeah, I mainly posted that image just for the old school awesomeness of it, not for pointers on form. I'm also not gonna do overhead presses from behind the neck.

Reg Park: http://www.briansdriveintheater.com/regpark.html

He was also Ahnold's mentor.

And speaking of Ahnold, here is this hilarious ear worm for you:

I think you need to go all the way and be the jug-band equivalent of Kane Roberts.

Finding a machine-gun shaped banjo might be hard.

Ya know, I worked really, really, really hard to block that guy's existence from my memory, and it was working until now.

Someday, when I get motivated enough to get off my lazy ass and actually start exercising, I plan to do this exercise regimen....

Were I actually to gain significant weight (muscularly or otherwise, but in this case, specifically muscularly) I would want to do something like that to increase my muscular density and endurance. If I were to try it now, I'd just lose a shitload of weight and that would be that.

So back in '00 when i was in a fighting shape and trying to get into BUD/S I used that book and the joke is its based off the Royal Canadian Air Force thing I posted.

Starts off with very easy drills and then gets harder. The big difference is it incorperates pull ups and dips. Where the RCAF you need nothing but your own motivation.

That's awesome.

I dig the illustrations and style of the RCAF manual, too.

I would love it if the weights were real.

But I *am* impressed by anyone who can snap up a wheelie from a dead stop. I wish I could do that.
