Why this place is better than other places.

So someone else, whom I've met, and have many mutual friends with, but didn't actually know, died yesterday or the day before in a moto accident.

Someone on bayarearidersforum (barf) either saw the incident, or saw the immediate aftermath, and apparently it was pretty gruesome. Dude is messed up just from having seen it. He posted about it on barf, and the immediate responses were "Good, fuck him. I'm glad he's dead if he wasn't wearing gear" (though whether he was or not is debatable). From there, the thread quickly devolved into arguments between unrelated assclowns while those people that did know the two folks involved in the accident are just trying to sort out why their friend is dead.

The whole thing ended up in people getting suspended from the forum, and a fat reminder that lots of folks are petty and retarded.

Thanks for not being that way here.

Yeah, uh, no problem.

WTF? I thought the San Fran kids are supposed to be all peace-and-love hippy-dippy shit?

Sorry to hear one of your acquaintances got greased. Nobody deserves that shit.

Sorry to hear about all of that. That's pretty fucked up right there. I too thought the barf fold were pretty chill, but I guess some things bring out the worst in people.

Nah, Barf has a significant amount of "tough behind the keyboard"-ness to it. I've met a lot of people from the Barf board and, in person, I like'm. But there's a lot of stuff on that board that chaffes me the wrong way. Indeed, things get weird around here too on occassion, but it rarely gets personal (sometimes things are taken personally despite the lack of intent).

Indeed, it's a pretty big group over there, so the likelihood of asshattery is significantly increased. Still, I've met a lot of the guys at pubs or at track days and, for the most part, good people in real life. I like this lil corner of the web much better.

Yeah, we're the best.
Sorry to hear about anyone getting hurt/killed like that.

That is beyond asshattery, that is either plain fucking malice or some ugly psychological defect that makes them feel good about other people's misfortune and gloating about it gives them some manner of personal verification.
Either way, them is bad people and, indeed, it's a good thing this place isn't like that.

That guy may have made a bad choice and might still be alive had he acted sanely, but still. What the fuck is wrong with people?!
This wasn't an international gun runner shot with his own merchandise by the child soldiers he armed, which is about the only situation I can think of where positive feelings about that person's demise would be morally justifiable.

Sorry to hear that.

I just ditched the vintage club I have been a part of for 17 years, for reasons of similar douchetacularity. This is a good place.

I mean seriously, I'm angry that there are motorcyclists out there who would applaud, or at least honestly feign applauding, the death of a fellow rider.

When a bunch of cagers goes on similarly, perhaps about a safety gear and helmet wearing rider, do they nod and go "Yes, his choice to ride a bike instead of a safe car, his own damn fault he got dead, and since motorcyclists can be such a nuisance and bad example for the children, you have any right to feel glad."
I would almost say this is the same, but it isn't, applauding the death of a fellow rider, even one who acted stupidly, is a betrayal. A rider looking out for another rider saved my life (trucker who did first aid and persuaded the cops that, no, he's not dead, call the ambulance already), I guess these fucktards don't look out for anyone.

Yeah, fwiw, the guy ended up very much crushed and ground up underneath the front end of a car. A suit of armor probably wouldn't have saved him.

Likewise I used to be on another forum but got tired of the keyboard balls. There would be similar threads about wearing gear and just desserts.

It's seriously a shame.

Damn, that's lame.

If people want to pass judgment, that's fine. I do it too, but that doesn't mean that anybody deserves to die for not wearing something.

Guess what is even smarter than wearing gear? Driving a car with airbags and a seatbelt! The same logic that says a rider with insufficient gear deserves it applies to every motorcyclist really.

Actually some of us are supermegaultra dickheads, but find a way to save the vitriol on other forums. In my case I drink a lot to keep the demons at bay, and use my knitting forum for general evil doings.

The "serves them right" for not wearing gear/paying attention/being smart attitude seems to be getting more prevalent among motorcyclists. Read a thread today at ADVRider that had a lot of that type of comments. Had never seen that type of thing over there.

Yeah, this is where I come to talk to adult(ish) folks who generally treat each other like human beings. The judgmental pre-adolescent behavior prevalent on our local regional board drove me off years ago. I still check in occasionally, and there are some good folks there, but the signal to noise ratio is for shit.

Sucks when anyone (not a psychopath) dies. "."

What I take away from any cycle related death is sorrow for the victim and their loved ones and hopefully the possibility of a learning moment for those still riding. And, save a helmet (which really can save your life *if* ur lucky) all other gear is good for roadrash prevention and that's about it (ok, good boots can maybe save some u some titanium implants..). So really, shorts, wifebeater and flip flops, whatever, but just wear a helmet and your life is as "protected" as it is gonna get riding a bike.

IMO--Most of the atgatt-nazi crowd is just looking for reinforcement for their own insecurities...like you need someone else's approval, tacit or otherwise, to protect your own skin? (literally) I could care less if anyone else riding wears _any_gear at all frankly. It's their life & hide, not mine. And vice versa. (I do get tired of "aren't you hot in those leathers?" Yeh, I like my skin. :)

Only reason many peeps are decent/inoffensive in person is they don't wanna get their face slapped. The 'real' comes out when they don't have that concern. The internet has unmasked a lot of people as jerks. Sometimes that comes in handy.

When warm weather rolls around, there are always countless fatal accidents. Treating the people who don't wear gear or don't ride year round as non-riders is a way of separating yourself from them and it makes it easier to say "it won't happen to me."

Motorcycling is dangerous, and not wearing gear is a sure fire way to make it much more dangerous, but that doesn't mean that someone passing away isn't tragic. A lot of people just don't have the money for full gear, or understanding of just how important it can be. I'm glad that my first few accidents were minor, and that I learned my lesson about wearing all the protection I could, the first one could have just as easily been fatal and I could have been the news story.

We should all check in on this thread from time to time. As internet forums go, we do pretty well in controlling the jackassery, but there are times when a tune-up is in order.

Anybody wanna talk cafe racers?

I'm sorry for your losses. First a friend, then respect for fellow riders. Lousy all around.

I don't know, sometimes I think the only difference between this place and those is that theres hardly anyone here. But I guess, to paraphrase Stalin, (a lack of) quantity does have a quality all of it's own.

Just lobbed a grenade at the barf general discussion forum about people trolling on threads about death. Lots of inappropriate language and a general tirade.

Kinda hoping they suspend me, so I will stop wasting my time on that site for a while.

Just a thought: Use some manner of IP anonymization, a separate browser keeping your cookies separate and register under another name. Then troll yourself, troll harder and faster than anyone else before you. Be so fucking obnoxious that they have no other choice but to change the rules. Be an agent provocateur.
Or just walk away, which is probably the best solution if you want to stay sane.

That's one of my favorite things about this place, and one of the reasons I've never really tried to "recruit" people.

Farting in a packed stadium will bring no shame upon you. Sitting at a dinner table is another story.

This, right here.

Fuck barf.
Fuck pretty much the entire internet.

Thanks everyone, for maintaining a higher standard of humanity.
