Seriously? Damn.
Well, looking at Wikipedia, he had a good run. He started living the rockstar life fifty years ago. More than the average life-expectancy of times past. And he was in Velvet Underground. Off the top of my head, I cannot even name a single tune of theirs. But I hear that name and I picture the sort of sex and drugs excesses only the '60s seem to have produced. Not the crude, low-brow debauchery of the '70s groups, like Led Zep, who were by that time really mostly naughty.
But behavior which, by the social standards of it's time, was beyond the mere "filthy", rejecting even what by those standards was "naughty" as conventional and tame. Behavior for which "unrestrained" isn't a sufficient adjective.
Considering I'm fairly ignorant of their catalog, though probably, if not definitely, aware of their tunes by ear, I have no clue why they of all bands make me think such things. I think I do recall they were part of Warhol's factory crowd, weren't they? Perhaps that's it.
In any case. In an age when many of his contemporary musicians didn't live to see thirty, Mr. Reed managed to collect a half-century of being a rock-musician, and a proper star for most of that, too. He lived to a respectable age for someone of his generation, despite surely having done all the things that usually to get you dead young. Repeatedly. With supermodels and to musical accompaniment.
Ignorant as I am, I'm still sure his passing is a loss to the world of modern music. It is to be mourned by all who enjoy the rock, definitely.
But if anyone had a life full of win, he is it. '60s rock-star, '70s rock-god and, rather than succumbing to drugs, booze or other such things, he held on to life's neck all the way to a respectable 71 years of age.
Farewell, sir! You win!

What do you think I just did?
As I suspected, I was well aware of them by ear. Of the first half dozen of results that came up on google video, half had the tune popping into my head when I just read the title.
Venus in furs I knew, too, just not the title. And they worked with Nico. She was one of Warhol's projects, wasn't she. As I suspected, also!
