can you describe the roots of the "douche-bag" expression?

The phrase originated in the 70's on the Saturday night Live show.
It was an Elizibethan sketch with Garret Morris and the usual cast. Something about the Earl of Douchebag beign a dork. The rest is history.
Too few brain cells still exist from that period to give an accurate accounting.
