So as some of you read this, youmay think to your self as you go on "WOW This guys might be nuts". Yeah maybe I am but this is some of the crap I think about sometimes. So here it goes....

I was at an old friends house a few nights ago. I hadn't seen him in a while so we spent the evening chatting about life and old friendships and life and such. After a few hours we went outside to have a smoke. As we came in he said to me, "Check this out" and proceeded to pull out this large tupper container and inform me that this was the beginning of his own personal survival kit. Now surviving certain situations was something that him and I used to speak about at great lengths. Back in those days of Gutter punk happiness and government conspiracy and so on. He and I were both homeless gutter punks together, so at that point in time it was urban survival probably at its worst but hey were still alive today. Though what he was showing me was for a little more of an extreme situation. He had aquired many different items for the survival of himself and his children, things from simple items to keep warm, to maybe even a few items for personal defence and such. I could go through and list them all but that would probably make this post way to damn long.

So anyway.... My question I present to you all. Is putting together some kind of survival kit something that any of you have thought of or have done. Maybe some items that you would say were essential for either short or long term (apocaliptic, I know i spelled that wrong) scale. Lets face it... The world we live in today is not all peaches and cream. you may also post your "You and your friend a fucking nutz" comments if you so desire, for that is a viable opinoin. However is you do post a comment like that I would expect atleast a small explanation as to why you think that simple planning is rediculous.

Doesn't sound nuts to me. I have a my EMT jump bag, all my Urban Exploration Gear and other misc items lying around. But they're all where I can get to them ASAP. I don't see anything wrong with being prepared, look at all the natural disasters we've had lately... then you add the oncoming zombie apocalypse.. oh uh.... nevermind...


B.O.B (bug out bags) are worth keeping around. Grab it, hop on your scoot, hit the gas and you're gone...

Fuck, I was just typing a reply when my firewall updated and rebooted the system without prompting me.

What I was saying is that I never really thought about a survival kit, but just realised I have the most important stuff handy.
Clothes for all seasons and weathers, comfortable, sturdy footwear likewise, instant food, a pot, handy tools, knifes, a flashlight with good batteries, matches, lighters and lighter fluid to make fire with (the smokers shall survive the apocalypse), sturdy zip tie garbage bags and a very thick skinned garden waste bag for waterproof packing, a rucksack, sleeping bag, my important documents in one place and a crowbar for self defence and optaining any items I might lack
I reckon I could pack and get moving in just under fifteen minutes.
If I cannot get a ride, I know where I can "borrow" a bicycle.

I wouldn't call myself well prepared, but somewhat prepared. Also, when stressed, I develop an intimidating, determined manner which is always useful.
Also, I just happen to be lucky enough to live in an area which is less than desaster prone.

But thanks for making me more aware of what to keep stocked for the worst case

Here in Colorado I do a bit of wildland fire fighting and have my ready bad with everything I might need for 14 days (the min I get sent on. it’s a fed thing) so I guess that I have the short term thing going. Long term…. I think I could get one together but what not to bring I guess is the next question.

i'm with Red; keeping a bug-out bag is not uncommon. it's all a matter of thinking through what you will need if you have to boogie FAST. Everybody's is individual.

Just warning though... Its is good to be prepared in my personal opinion but you will find that some people think about things like this to the point where it consumes there life. Dont let worries like this turn you into some freak that is consumed by dire thoughts. It is unhealthy and can bring about no good in ones life.
