Complete Bastards.

So what kind of asshole boss calls at 12:10 on New Year's Eve expecting you to immediately fix a minor mistake you made, and then threatens to fire you after you scramble to fix it? Even though you were out of town, but had brought a laptop and had an internet connection in the hotel, not to mention having the staggering luck to be SOBER on New Year's Eve?

God, I hope everyone else here had a better New Year's weekend than I did. Staying awake all night on New Year's Eve worrying about getting shit-canned is one crappy way to start the year.

Time to find a different employer, dude.

I've had similiar problems in my work life, and I'm coming more and more to the conclusion that American corporations are completely fucking insane. To advance your "career" you must eat, sleep, drink, shit, and breathe your job... which is complete nonsense. It's a job.

I've seen too many folks who miss their lives (my father is a perfect example), who aren't there for their families, and who fuck up their marriages (or whatever) for their jobs.

IT'S JUST A JOB.

Fuck 'em.

Smile, nod, do whatcha gotta do, and start getting the resumes out. The sensation of satisfaction when you finally turn in your 2-weeks notice is tremendous. :)

Good luck, stay sane, and happy hunting!

Seems to me that this is the type of situation that the words "Hostile Work Environment" were made for. Fuck it, get together with a group of like-minded disinfranchised coworkers and start a class action suit against the fuckers.

Then again, it could be your best moment. Being liberated from an assh*le boss in an oppressive work environment is like having a steel refrigerator lifted off your chest. It was for me, 16 years ago.

I'd add my 2 cents to the rest here and suggest that you find a new employer. Suffering a position in a hostile workplace will take years off your life without your knowing it. I've tried it - it was a big mistake. The stress it creates will drain you from wanting to live outside of work, and will cause you to doubt your own skills more than it should. Even if it pays less, a job change might give you a fresh look at what's out there and can cause you to improve your career track. I wish you luck.

Wednesday, Dec. 28 Floodwaters peaked out five feet from the door to my house. Barn partially underwater. Running around trying to help neighbors whose houses were flooding and whose possesions were floating away. Road closed by giant mudslide. Boss decides now is a great time to call me and have a discussion about a problem he got himself into and wanted me to get him out of. Asshole. Customer involved in same project hears what I am dealing with and proceeds to call me at home. Asshole. Some poeple have no common sense.

Friday/Saturday Dec. 30-31 Next wave of flooding came in the middle of the night. I had an hour and a half to get everything out of my house that was important to me before the water got too deep to drive through. Luckily it stopped two inches shy of flowing into our house. We were the only house in the valley to not flood. The downside: XR600 and a YZ250 are now somewhere between my house and the Pacific Ocean. CB 350 could now be used as an aquarium. Happy New Year!

Damn. . . good luck recovering your bikes and recovering from the flood. Hope the weather improves down there (both in the skies and the workplace).

Hanover, you win the "shittiest start to the new year" award. I hope everything works out as well as possible for you. I can't imagine there's much I can do to help you out, but if there IS something, let me know.

Everyone else, thanks for the encouragement and sympathy. I didn't get canned (kind of anti-climactic), so I'm ever-so-slightly more calm now.

And now, if you'll excuse me, I have a date with monster.com. :D

Smash -- Word to the wise: www.careerbuilder.com. Life in the Information Age is good.

Hanover -- Dude... Um, I don't know what else to say but "oh, fuck."

Oh, fuck.

Yeah, I think Hanover wins the "Shitty Start to 2006" award. I'm so sorry, man. Glad to hear the house survived, anyway, and here's hoping your insurance was full, paid, and up to date!

:(

Like Smash said, if there's anything we can do, let us know! (free patches for Hanover, for one... ;) )

Smash ,one thing to remember ,you were looking for a job when you got there you will be looking for one when you leave. Maybe time for a career change doing something you like?
Hanover, hope things get less shity for you. My dad had a saying he used in a spot such as this, it could always be a hell of alot worse.
Good luck to both you dudes.

Thanks for the kind words. I don't know how proud I am for the "award", but yeah, things could have been much worse. My house is still where it started out at, which, honestly kind of surprised me when the sun came up. The bikes can be replaced. I've always managed to dodge the brunt of natural disasters up until now. Dealing with this has definitely given me some new perspective and empathy for people whose lives have been impacted by things such as this. You can only do what you can do, and after that all you can do is sit by powerless and let nature take it's course.
Oh, and free patches are not necessary.
