What's the program . . . . If you didn't get into the school, would the program be worth anything to you?
How much does the program cost?
Is the Law School one you want to go to?
Will you be in a position this summer to work hard and be in the top 20%?

Why Law? For widely different (I think) views on the subject perhaps we could get input from both Dr J and Goose on the subject........ and of course any other Law student/lawyers.

Appalacian School of Law? Gonna be a revenuer? Chase down Snuffy Smith and try to shut down his still?
Sorry, I know I am not helping, but I grew up in Eastern KY (but I am apparently one of the few UTMC members with ten digits)
Of the remaining students who did NOT take the summer program, what was the acceptance rate among that group?

You can teach knowledge in school, but you can't teach wisdom. And this, my friends, is wisdom.

You've already made the decision, but I just want to reinforce it. It sounds somewhat similar to the firefighter hiring procees that I'm bludgeoning myself up against. 1600 candidates for a waiting list, no currently open slots, but maybe 5 or so over the next 2 years.
You have to keep trying and just beat yourself bloody into the brick wall. Your soft tissue injuries will heal. The wall can't heal, and will eventually crumble.

You've already decided to go, but I am going to play devil's advocate anyway - as I have been through this and at this point the most you have had to pony up is a few hundred dollar deposit - which is a fair amount of money - could be used for new carbs, helmet or several cases of beer - but is a lot less than the $100K in loans you are going to accumulate in loans - give or take. So you still have some time to give this serious thought.
Ask yourself - why do I want to be a lawyer, what field do I actually want to get into? Lots of folks go into law because they want a "profession" but don't consider what they actually have to do on a day to day basis. Hours usually suck, some of the work can be mindnumbing and you deal with a lot of assholes. There are bad parts too.
Go to the school - find out what their job placement is in that field and what their job placement is general - especially in the city you want to live in after graduation (other than for the Ivys and a select other top schools - most schools tend to be very regional - employers hire people from nearby schools) - you are making a sizeable investment of time and money and you want to know you will get a decent return from that investment. I know folks in some pretty decent schools who had a hard time getting jobs period - let along in their chosen field.
I presume since you have been in the navy you have not worked in a law office or law related field - find some folks who have and get honest opinions of what their day is really like.
PM me if you have any specific questions. Problem with people who want to go to law school is that a. they are usually bright and b. they are usually "type a" individuals - which means when someone tells them that a situation may be difficult - they usually take that advice with a grain of salt and say "not me, I can deal with anything" - well you'll have to deal with this situation for a while, so might as well give it some honest consideration.
Goodluck and godspeed - the world could use a few more motorcycle riding lawyers who don't ride chromed out road kings.

Ah, and here's the big question: Will you be able to avoid "the fucking scientists"?

Drop out and start a porn site. You'll make more money, and see a bunch of tittys. Plus, if life has taught me anything, it's that there are too many lawyers, and too little internet pornography.

Screw it! Take the summer off and ride your bike across country. See the world and discover what's missing that you could provide. What ? we need more lawyers? Anyways it sounds like a bribe.
Of course bribing is a law course isn't it? Find a situation where you can truly help others. You'll feel a whole lot better about yourself and the tasks you encounter. For instance... since you're here at the utmc you must like bikes. Start a business where you develop a motocycle that all the Iraqi veterans who have lost limbs could ride.
Now good and think no more of the dark way of the lawyer.
