Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

If you cannot Debauch because you get an IP blacklist error, try Debauching again time. It may work immediately, it may take a few attempts. It will work eventually, I don't think I had to click debauch more than three times. Someone is overzealous at our hosting company, but only on the first couple of attempts.

Some unpleasant miscreant was firing incessant database queries at our server, which forced the Legal Department of our hosting company, via their Abuse subdivision, to shut us down. No I have none.
All I can do it button the hatches, and tighten up a few things. Such as time limits on how long you may take to compose a post and hit Debauch! As of 24/01/10, I've set that at 30 minutes for now.

To restrict further overloads, any unregistered users had to be locked out.
How do we know who is or isn't an unregistered user?
By forcing anyone who wants in to Log In.
Is that annoying?
Yes. But there's only so much the Administerrerrerr can do to keep this place running.

Muzak is the mind killer - Revisited

Post by smashinator » Tue Nov 30, 2004 7:51 am

For fuck's sake. There is CHRISTMAS music on the office muzak today. And it isn't the good "Los Straightjackets Christmas" kind of music. Nope. It's a Lawrence Welk Christmas for us cube-dwellers.

It's bad enough that they subject the people on hold to this crap, why does it have to be a part of MY life?

Oh, hey, Bruce Springsteen! I'm sure I'm going to hate it by the actual christmas, but the Boss DOES sing a mean carol.

I know, and Christmas muzak in the desert on top of it all seems almost sacrieligious..... : )
Fortunately, us cube-dwellers get to bring radios, so I am listening to 311 and not the Boss or Mr. Welk....
I told Wycked it is time for another coffee run attaempt - what do you have going on this week? And where are you in the valley anyway, Smash?

What do I have going on apart from digging pencils into the meaty parts of my inner ear?

not much. I'm most always up for getting coffee!

I'm in Ahwatukee. I live a few miles west of Ray Rd. & hwy 10.

Just let me know when and where (and possibly how to get there) and I'll show up.

You can tune it online and blast a different muzak song to annoy the manager enjoying the Muzak they are blaring over your speakers.

Never blame Muzak, only blame your boss. Muzak has some great shit that whoever has the dial won't let you listen to:

Snagged from the Muzak site:

Muzak Pays Special Tribute to Johnny Ramone
September 04, 2004

Charlotte, NC, September 16, 2004 - To honor the life, music and memory of Johnny Ramone, Muzak is playing two songs by the Ramones at the top of every hour on its Modern Rock program.

Ramone died yesterday after a five year battle with prostate cancer.

As one of the original members and co-founders of the Ramones, he is recognized for his significant influence on the punk rock scene and modern rock music. The band broke up in 1996, having released 21 studio and live albums, featuring popular punk hits like I Wanna Be Sedated, Teenage Lobotomy, and Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue. The Ramones helped to establish a voice for a rebellious underground youth and paved the way for bands such as the Sex Pistols and The Clash and later groups like Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

"Johnny Ramone is a hero to any fan of punk and garage music. We've lost a legend, but his music and memory will live on," said Bill Spencer, Muzak Audio Architect.

The musical tribute will continue through Saturday, September 18.

There was also a tribute to the Old Dirty Bastard as well among others.

Oh yeah, if anyone is interested in a bit of history, I just finished a great book called Please Kill Me: an oral history of punk Hundreds of interviews have been organized chronilogically [sp?] by the founders of the original Punk Magazine spanning the very beginnings with Andy Warhol/Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground to the early 80's and the demise of the Ramones. My favorite parts were when they first sent the Ramones to England and they met The Sex Pistols and The Clash who were pretty much scared of the Ramones at the time. Oh yeah, and also when the Mods came after Joey Ramone and he had no idea why all these really nicely dressed guys wanted to kick his ass.
