Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

Some unpleasant miscreant was firing incessant database queries at our server, which forced the Legal Department of our hosting company, via their Abuse subdivision, to shut us down. No I have none.
All I can do it button the hatches, and tighten up a few things. Such as time limits on how long you may take to compose a post and hit Debauch! As of 24/01/10, I've set that at 30 minutes for now.

To restrict further overloads, any unregistered users had to be locked out.
How do we know who is or isn't an unregistered user?
By forcing anyone who wants in to Log In.

Yes. But there's only so much the Administerrerrerr can do to keep this place running.

Y'know, I was honestly confused... and, yes, a little scared... when I saw the title and author of this post.

Thankfully, all is still right with the world.

You had me scared for a moment there, Goose.

I need to make up some of those for the asshats who are always parking their cars in a way that spans multiple motorcycle spaces where I park near Van Ness and Geary. They make me so angry!

I used to have an old Landcruiser. Lifted, big meaty tires, you get the picture. I would park it at work where anyone else could park, and one day I find a note similar to that on my window, exept that it accused me of taking up too much space, being retarded for owning a big truck, and I forget what else. "Whatever," I thought. Stuffed it in my glove box for future use myself. The next week I get another one.
I take it off, turn it over, and write, "Next time meet me here at my truck and we'll see who's fucking retarded." Place it back on my window so the person who inevitably will check to see if it's still there will see it.
Never got another one.

I understand the use of these things; I just don't like the sniping, especially if the user doesn't have due cause to place one. I've moved cars out of the way (with my own car and some burning of rubber) to get out in the past; never had a cage park my bike in, though.

There's a street festival in Philly every year a few blocks from where my parents live. Parking is very tight there normally, and the huge influx of people from all over the city end up parking illegally everywhere.

Mom and dad live in a townhouse on a tiny, narrow street (about 10 feet from curb to curb) and I came home one day to find a Cadillac on the sidewalk, blocking the garage door.

After an hour, I hooked up my 3/4 ton turbodiesel crewcab Dodge to the frame and dragged the car off the sidewalk, down the block and around the corner leaving it in a dirt lot by the railroad tracks.

When the people came back, they rang the doorbell:

"where's the car?"

"what car?"

"the one that was parked here"

"on the sidewalk, blocking our garage?"

"yeah"

"never saw it"
