Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

Reality Check?

Post by smashinator » Thu Jul 30, 2009 10:03 am

I'm a bit bent out of shape, even after considering the source (an idiot), so I just wanted to get some input from a few impartial folks.

A member of my social circle posted the following to his facebook Wall:

"Does anyone else sit on their commute into work and think, "Wow... this is it? This is what humanity has evolved into?" "

A bunch of others posted responses along the lines of "every day."

Frankly, I'm tired of pretending I'm superior to everyone, and furthermore, I think we've evolved pretty far considering that, like all animals, our primary interests are still eating and screwing. We're not perfect but, FUCK, have some gratitude, asshole.

So I replied: "I hate to rub it in but I think, "WHEEEEEEEEEEE!" Cars are bad for your soul. Lose two of those wheels and free your mind. You'll be amazed at what follows."

Preachy, maybe, but I don't think it was that bad, and I don't think it was an attack.

So he responds to me: "I'll save your post to read to you in the nursing facility you'll live in after your traumatic brain injury."

 :( :x

...was that deserved? I mean, I think that response is pretty fuckin' hostile. But maybe that's just cuz I don't wish traumatic brain injuries on people I'm friends with.

He's got a record of douchebaggery, so I'm mad about what he said, but it's not like I take anything he says to heart.

So am I nuts, or was that really as shitty as I think?

Thanks for the feedback, y'all. I'm not trying to whine about my poor, delicate wittle feelings. This one just shocked the fuck out of me because it seems like there's some real hostility there and I was wondering if it was out of proportion or not.

I wrote this fellow off a long time because he was such an obnoxious prick (worse than me!) and just recently started communicating with him again. Mistake made, lesson learned, back to silence.

But a vague acquaintance, fuck 'em.

An exchange like that would be perfectly normal in New England. We call it giving/taking shit, and in the UK it would be giving/taking the piss. An appropriate New England response to the guy's pudding offer would be "Thanks Mary".

I'm familiar with the concept of giving/taking shit. I still think going from "cars are bad for your soul" to "I hope you suffer brain damage" is quite a leap. I do, believe it or not, have friends with whom "die in a fiery wreck" is a perfectly acceptable greeting. He is not one of them.

That said, after thinking on it, the problem is that I'm not willing to take shit from this particular guy.

Therefore I should not give him any shit either. As such, I'll let him wallow in ennui and go back to ignoring him.

Ultimately, it doesn't make my life better having him around, so fuck him.

Also, no internets for me in the morning until I'm fully caffeinated and thinking clearly.

this is pretty shitty. i don't know the extent or nature of your friendship but judging from your reaction he's not the type of guy to kid or bulshit about this sort of thing.

what he's saying is essentially, "if you get horribly injured some day, i'll be there to rub it in your face."

Like you, I recently made a mild but sarcastic comment towards an acquaintance who has subsequently unleashed some seriously cruel words to me on more than one occasion. I tried to make right be apologizing and shortly realized that this person actually wanted to be confrontational, wanted to bait me, and wanted to hold the grudge.

You know what? There are so many amazing, wonderful people out in the world, that it just doesn't make sense to waste time on the folks who lack a sense of humor and/or hurl cruel words at you. I agree with the rest of these folks: fuck 'em.

That guy's just pissed because you're right, and you're happy. Some people just have to piss in other people's cheerios.

My response would be something like:

"Have fun with your soul-crushing slog through traffic to and from work every day. I'll be out accelerating in the breeze, smelling the fresh cut grass and enjoying the ride."

Or if you're really feeling like rubbing it in:

Many people have no interest in motorcycle transportation for safety reasons. Nothing wrong with that, it's just their choice. I don't care for commuting in cages, I'd rather walk or bicycle time permitting. Even if it's slower, at least I'm moving.

You're right to just shrug it off and ignore him. Wishing death on someone is a mean thing to do and people like that aren't worth considering.
