Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

If you cannot Debauch because you get an IP blacklist error, try Debauching again time. It may work immediately, it may take a few attempts. It will work eventually, I don't think I had to click debauch more than three times. Someone is overzealous at our hosting company, but only on the first couple of attempts.

Some unpleasant miscreant was firing incessant database queries at our server, which forced the Legal Department of our hosting company, via their Abuse subdivision, to shut us down. No I have none.
All I can do it button the hatches, and tighten up a few things. Such as time limits on how long you may take to compose a post and hit Debauch! As of 24/01/10, I've set that at 30 minutes for now.

How many attempts should we give seniors to pass a driving test? twenty? fifty? four-hundred? Unlimited? I think if someone fails the first ten times... they should not get a license. It becomes a safety issue.

South Korean woman passes driver's exam on 950th try

SEOUL, South Korea — A woman in South Korea who tried to pass the written exam for a driver's license with near-daily attempts since April 2005 has finally succeeded on her 950th time. The aspiring driver spent more than 5 million won ($4,200) in application fees, but until now had failed to score the minimum 60 out of a possible 100 points needed to get behind the wheel for a driving test.

Cha Sa-soon, 68, finally passed the written exam with a score of 60 on Wednesday, said Choi Young-chul, a police official at the drivers' license agency in Jeonju, 130 miles (210 kilometers) south of Seoul.

Police said Cha took the test hundreds of times, but had no specific total. Local media said she took the test 950 times.

Now she must pass a driving test before getting her license, Choi said.

Repeated calls to Cha seeking comment went unanswered. She told the Korea Times newspaper she needed the license for her vegetable-selling business.

If she can't read, she shouldn't be driving. How the hell could she be a safe driver if she can't read the road signs? the literacy rate in south korea for adults is right around 98%. the driving test is given in four different languages.

how many people do you know who have attempted to pass a test that many times? It just seems like if she doesn't understand the test by the 949th time... maybe she shouldn't drive.

I work with a mid 50ish gentleman who can not read. He is an excellent driver and I would trust him with my life. I am certain that he gets the gist of road sign information.

If I remember Popper correctly, that's a reverse induction error or something.

Smart doesn't necessarily make you a good driver, while dumb doesn't necessarily make you a bad driver.

But someone who cannot read definitely should think 29 times before driving. Of course, there's illiteracy and functional illiteracy. I don't expect 6th grade reading and text-interpretation skills from drivers (heck, I can't even expect them from joe-average who I deal with everyday), but enough to read text in roadsigns and figure out the questions in a written test ought to be, really, the minimum.

Also someone who needs 900 attempts to score the minimum at the written exam should have to retake it three times at random intervals within a few months to make sure the last one wasn't a fluke.

To be honest, I know some pretty screwed up people, but not any I would think of as dumb.

There are many reasons this woman my not have been able to pass a test. I've known some pretty smart people that couldn't pass a test on much of anything no matter how versed they were on the subject. I would suspect they have some sort of undiagnosed issues such as dyslexia. These thing would most likely not prevent them from operating a motor vehicle.
