Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

Some unpleasant miscreant was firing incessant database queries at our server, which forced the Legal Department of our hosting company, via their Abuse subdivision, to shut us down. No I have none.
All I can do it button the hatches, and tighten up a few things. Such as time limits on how long you may take to compose a post and hit Debauch! As of 24/01/10, I've set that at 30 minutes for now.

To restrict further overloads, any unregistered users had to be locked out.

By forcing anyone who wants in to Log In.

Yes. But there's only so much the Administerrerrerr can do to keep this place running.

Bush's boat goes aground

Post by Sisyphus » Wed Jul 14, 2010 6:07 pm

I guess this goes here...

Too bad it wasn't further east, where the sea sharpens it's teeth for real.

story here:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.c ... 120D09.DTL
(07-13) 04:05 PDT Kennebunk, Maine (AP) --

Synopsis:

Former President George H.W. Bush's fishing boat ended up high and dry on a beach near his Maine home after it ran aground in thick fog.

Fidelity IV became a curiosity for tourists as it sat stranded on Gooch's Beach at low tide on Monday. Hours later, his staff moved the boat to its dock in Kennebunkport.

Bush spokesman Jim Appleby says the former president and some family members were aboard when the boat ran aground between 3 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. No one was hurt.

Appleby says Bush was close to shore in low visibility when a wave pushed his boat onto the beach. As water receded at low tide, tourists walked up and snapped photos of the 38-foot boat.

I like the old guy...at least I got a lot of respect for him. Combat pilot, served the country at the presidents's request even when it was "suicidal" to his career...(took over the CIA after the Church Committee hearings)...Saw "Reganomics" for what it was, unfortunately didn't reverse the policy though... worked with world powers to push back Iraq, but wasn't stupid enough to invade it...handled the fall of the eastern block with class, not antagonizing the USSR into a repeat of 1968....all in all not a bad guy

Yeah, didn't agree with all Bush I's policies, but at least he wasn't a moron. As stated, he didn't invade Iraq (was too mindful of the consequences), and had the stones to raise taxes even when he knew it would torpedo his re-election.

Bush II, on the other hand, can eat a knife and die in a fire.

As I've said for years, it takes a real shmuck to make George HW Bush look like a considered statesman, but his son has proven himself up to that task.

GHW Bush sucked, but not *nearly* as bad as Shrub did.

Sounds about right.

Although I have to admit, I didn't see the 'H' so I thought it was Shrub.
