banned books week

this is the week the ALA promotes books that have been challenged and banned.

the classic i am reading for this week this year is one i picked up just yesterday, without even realizing today was the start of BBW or that the book had been banned: joseph conrad's "heart of darkness".

ah yes. the dystopian universe as explained by an anthropomorphized bear...

but really, these are all books that people have tried to ban over here. most of them unsuccessfully, however. although the harry potter books were successfully banned from the kid's school library where we used to live. where we live now? the high school ended all possible trouble by only having a tiny library full of reference books.

Something tells me there are a lot more than 100 books that would be found on that list.

A better list would be books that have been banned, not just banned and/or challenged.

There are some really stupid people out there. Winnie the Pooh? Charlotte's Web? The Old Man and the Sea? That was just a short story.
Brave New World and 1894 were required reading when I was in school. So was Animal Farm, Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier (sp?), and a whole host of others that were on this list. Shit, I had to read all sorts of Steinbeck in 7th or 8th grade.

What do kids read nowadays, I wonder?

And SR, if you're into Conrad after that book (not his best), I'm a Conrad fiend. I can give you some good titles.

I own the Little Golden Book version of Little Black Sambo.

I find in incredible that Coppola could take a novel from the late 19th century and apply it to the Vietnam war; and not just the war in general but a very tiny part of the conflict that most people were unaware of at the time.

I'm really suprised Johnny Got His Gun isn't on that list. I know it's been banned before. Happy to say, I've read many of those books. I think I'll adopt that list as my reading list for the next year...

I remember having the Little Black Sambo series on my Viewmaster discs when I was a kid...Wish I still had them.
