Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

Some unpleasant miscreant was firing incessant database queries at our server, which forced the Legal Department of our hosting company, via their Abuse subdivision, to shut us down. No I have none.
All I can do it button the hatches, and tighten up a few things. Such as time limits on how long you may take to compose a post and hit Debauch! As of 24/01/10, I've set that at 30 minutes for now.

To restrict further overloads, any unregistered users had to be locked out.

By forcing anyone who wants in to Log In.

Yes. But there's only so much the Administerrerrerr can do to keep this place running.

Eh, good luck with that. Let us know if you come up with the static electricity energy generator to keep the lights on. Because you know, without magic how would you make the weakest point of your entire philosophy work?

I've seen this movie before. It's the one where a bunch of people on floating cities attack other floating cities. No, maybe the one where an alien wipes out an entire colony 'cept for a little girl. Wait, the one where a tsunami tips over a ship and it's hell, upside down. Or...

I have no idea if wave power works, but if it does, this could be a viable solution. Admittedly, the "Seasteading" idea seems a bit kooky to me. Still, I'm intrigued

Yeah, move the thing to "stable regions", where those evil other governments you're competing against keep you safe...

I was expecting this. It's right along there with remote fly-in communities, live-in cruise ships, private islands, etc.
The gated-communities of the über-rich don't need no stinking fences and security guards, they have the luxury of distance.

Sounds hilarious. Obviously none of these folks have spent much time near the coast, where the damp air rots books, mold grows on leather, the furniture is forever damp, and cockroaches--oh God, the cockroaches...
They want a floating community? I say let 'em have it so long as they promise not to come back.

I'm sad no one has mentioned Snowcrash yet, someone was faster to the punch in the last thread about these waterheads.

I'll be reading Snow Crash when I'm done with the Dances With Dragons book, and after that, The Road.

Snow Crash sounds scary.
