As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

Red Doc Martens.

Post by piccini9 » Wed Sep 28, 2011 12:33 pm

Recently, for some reason, I have it in my head that I want a pair of red shoes.
At work we got to joking about Steel Toe Clown Shoes, and that has led me down this road. Along the lines of, "I don't really want to wear a backpatch"' are Red Docs still some kind of political statement?
Part of me really doesn't give a shit, and part of me wants to avoid conflict whenever possible.
But the bigger part of me just wants some big red boots.

Run into many old school nazi skins in your area? Those are the only folks that would likely think you were making a statement of any sort, and then only if you looked like you were putting on their costume. I wouldn't sweat it. I've got a pair of oxblood docs that I've been wearing for years, and I've never heard a peep from anyone about them.

I personally juge the people from their shoes. I think shoes are the most accurate expression of your personality.
I wear cheap allstar rip off's, motorcycle boots, or used army boots.

now on red doc martens, it all depends on how you wear the bottom or your pants. rolled up to show your red doc martens or just plain and simple pants. or shorts. do you wear them with your chainsaw when yo walk into a bar? maybe chainsaw can be the uber most accurate description of you personality, before the shoes ?

Thank you, I always thought I was the only one. Almost worth the price of admission, opening that box.

I stopped buying Docs because, apart from wearing out too quickly, I didn't see the point in paying that amount of money for shoes made in Asia. Now, I just buy a new pair of cheap workboots whenever the last pair wears out. The stuff made to the work-safety standards lasts ages, even the super-cheap ones they sometimes sell in the discount stores. And they tend to be EU made, despite the low price, so no sweatshops.

Doc's used to last only about a year, at the most, until the sole was too unevenly worn. Anyone else have that problem?

I had mine since around 1990 but as they aren"t water proof, I didn"t wear them a lot because they aren't biker friendly. and they're cold in winter too. actually doc marten's are the most shitty most expensive army parody non motorcycle boots around.

So far I love 'em even though I got the cheaper, made in Indonesia pair.
The ones I posted the pic of at the top of this thread don't look nearly as Bozo/Ronald McDonald/It as they do in the picture. If I decide I really like these I might get a pair of those.

Take it easy breaking them in. Last time I got a new pair I wore them to work the next day. Even though I had a desk job at the time the walk to and from the bus stop was enough to rub the backs of my heels pretty raw.

I have no recommendations. I just know that DM's are a fashion statement, not REAL boots.

I've had good luck with Timberland for work boots. Waterproof, durable, and comfortable. I've got about five years on my current pair, and believe me, tower work will put a pair of boots to the test.

I'll have to disagree with that. The original DMs (http://www.dmusastore.com/p-2344-1490.aspx) are good boots.

That said, not as good as Red Wings or Wesco. Chippewa and White's make good boots as well.

I used army boots for years. They are waterproof to the point where you can ride in heavy storms or walk in an feet deep of water and stay dry, and the leather is thicker than doc martens. And you can find them on flea markets.
Image
On the minus size, you will need a couple of month before they get soft enough to let you walk without crying.

I also used magnum boots, a lot softer, warmer but not as solid as genuine leather army boots and more expensive.
Image

none of those are probably as good as good motorcycle boots, but both are far better than the Doc martens I've own and they have a nice punk rocker look rather than the astronaut look of most motorcycle boots.

I wore docs in the shop back in the mid '90s. Standing on concrete all day is a real test of comfort. Back then Docs were still made in the UK, and mine had leather pull straps, were fully lined with padded collars, and had leather heel counters inside the boots, where the back of your heel rubs the lining.

They were good boots, comfortable and lasted. After two pairs of them, the company changed - the leather pull straps became fabric (and tore out the first time you actually used them), the lining became partial, the leather heel counters became cardboard.... and the boots got more expensive. They didn't last like they used to under daily use, either. You could get all kinds of colors, finishes and patterns, though!

I switched to Red Wings ( black 607s, if you care). Union made in the USA, leather padded collar and leather heel counter, partially lined, a real insole. A quality, comfortable work boot that lasts - I'm on my third set in 10 years, and I wear them every day.

Not waterproof, though (and they do offer waterproof boots). I got mine from Dave's in New York last time I was on the east coast since they had the best price:

http://www.davesnewyork.com/index.cfm/a ... -Work-Boot

Red Wing also has a cheaper imported Worx line. Never used them (and I never will), so I can't say if they are any good.

Doc are pure piles of horseshit.

The only reason someone would wear docs is because they don't realize that good boots are a better fashion statement than having sacks of crap what just so happen to have a union jack pattern on them.

Docs are for middle school children who want to rebel against their parents.

Docs are not for people who want boots that actually have stitching that is stitching (docs don't stitch their soles, they put stitches on the top of the rubber, and then glue them together, how do I know this? My FINAL 2 pairs of docs both had the sole... fall the fuck off. After less than 2 weeks of use. Not a joke or exaggeration.)

So... if "Fashion" is your thing, you can actually do much better than "Docs".

Try <a href="http://www.underground-cybershop.co.uk/ ... nderground Shoes</a> or <a href="http://www.vixensandangels.com/shoes-an ... ripfast</a>.

There you have your "fashion" boots... much better than piece-of-shit-docs.

Now, if you are ready to be a man, you can go ahead and get some real boots.

My suggestion is: <a href="http://www.georgiaboot.com/products/378 ... s">Georgia Boot Company Steel Toe Gore-Tex Logger Boot</a>.

Image

You don't need to keep the tassels or the laces, and these boots have NEVER let my feet get cold or injured, and I used to do steelwork. They cost a bit, but should last about 2-3 years with constant use.

I've never regretted a SINGLE dollar I have spent on good boots. I've been pissed about every dollar I've wasted on shitty boots. I've found few shittier than Docs.
