Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

Some unpleasant miscreant was firing incessant database queries at our server, which forced the Legal Department of our hosting company, via their Abuse subdivision, to shut us down. No I have none.
All I can do it button the hatches, and tighten up a few things. Such as time limits on how long you may take to compose a post and hit Debauch! As of 24/01/10, I've set that at 30 minutes for now.

To restrict further overloads, any unregistered users had to be locked out.

By forcing anyone who wants in to Log In.

Yes. But there's only so much the Administerrerrerr can do to keep this place running.

Thinking about riding to work tomorrow...

But the overnight low is forecast to be about 32. I don't have heated grips or anything fancy.
I have a 40 mile commute one-way.
Afternoon should be alright, in the mid to high fifties.
I do, however, have new duds from the auction the other day and good ice-climbing gloves.

Then I found this:

I dunno, could be some epic suffering. But the afternoon will be nice...

Do it!

Check out the cheap heated grip-wraps at Aerostich if you're looking for something temporary and warm.

I rode this morning, low 60s. Did fine. It should be fine on the way home though, low 70s.

I guess you sorted out your ignition(?) problem. Definitely ride, man. I'm riding tomorrow. I must say seeing snow yesterday gave me a jolt.

I'm sooo riding tomorrow. The ride home will make the morning commute worth it. Thinking about taking 213 home.

I have the heat lamp set up on the timer out there in the driveway right now. Should start warming things up around 0600...

Yeah, about that ignition thing. Turns out my timing had changed by a couple degrees so I wasn't getting full advance. I have theories about how that happened but for now I'll just assume that the stator plate had backed off a bit. The other thing it could have been is the rotor slipped but, seeing as how that's screwed into the exhaust cam, I'm going to ignore that possibility for now.

Riding in that cold of weather isn't bad, just be sure you've got a windproof layer on the outside, put liners in your gloves, and if you're really worried, put a pair of oversized mits on over that. Then again, I'm from WI, and we're all a little crazy about what we think is too cold or not.

Bah. Went today, had a glorious ride this morning with the frost everywhere, some fog, but the ride home was great. I'm going to do it again tomorrow.
Starting was a little rough, but we managed. And aside from a spark plug lead coming out of the coil on a bump everything went well.

See, no problem. It was cold here today as well (all the way down to 59f) but I managed to layer up properly and make it to class with no problems. I even had to use the cold start lever to get the bike up to temp, so we are not so different you and I.
