I’m of the belief that words are used to convey meaning. In my opinion they are merely an abstract representation of an action or idea. (If you don’t hold that belief, then read no further since this will just seem like a pile of bullshit to you...actually you might not want to read more becasue it is just a bit long winded)
So, it is not necessarily the words themselves that matter, but the meaning which they convey. The words themselves do not have an intrinsic quality, they cannot in of themselves be sexist or racist (which is why we see in some cases, words that were used with the intent of insulting or degrading a group being adopted by that very group. By taking ownership of those words the targeted group neuters their power). But, because they are an imperfect conveyance of meaning and ideas, the interpretation and the intent of those words are sometimes different.
It is because of this imperfection that it is also my belief that it is the intended meaning of those words that are important, and not the interpretation, because the interpretation is really the weak point in the conveyance, even though it is a necessary part of it.
For instance, consider possible interpretations of action…I like to hold hands with my fiancé, and I believe she likes to hold hands with me. Someone outside looking in can interpret that action in a number of different ways.
Maybe they think I do it because it feels nice, a pure pleasure/pain motivation.
Or maybe they can interpret it more deeply, assuming that it is a physical manifestation of a deep emotion, of love. The feeling that we are connected, sharing experiences together in this world ,giving each other in our union, mutual support and in doing so giving each other strength.
Or still an observer could choose to see me holding her hand as a sign of oppression. They could see it as me holding her as a declaration of ownership, and attempt to keep her at arm’s length in order to control her thoughts and actions.
Three wildly different interpretations of the same action. All with the equal possibility of being true, depending on what is my intent.
If you take the first interpretation, well you are not saying much about my character I suppose…if you take the second, you may interpret our relationship as a healthy, supporting union between two equals who treasure each other for who they are…But if you take the third, you are assuming that I am a sexist pig trying to control my woman who I see as property.
You may assume that I am a sexist pig for holding her hand. And, you may be offended. But if you ask why I am doing it and I tell you it is to keep my hands warm on a chilly day, or because I love her and find comfort in her touch, or maybe because I am a barely functional drunk and need her to help me walk without falling over….and then still then claim that the action is an inherently sexist one, motivated by the want to control, then you are not just commenting on the action, but dismissing all other interpretations as invalid, and in doing so labeling me as sexist and telling me what is my intent.
If Dobbs intent was sexist, then your interpretation is sound. If he claims that is not his intent, then you can either choose to believe him, or instead say that he is a lying sexist pig, or choose to even go a 3rd route which is to say that he is subconsciously a sexist pig, perpetuating the discrimination against women.
If you accept his assertion, then you would have to admit that your interpretation was a false one.
But, if you take either of the last two positions, you are either calling him a liar or you are claiming you know the intent better than the originator of the message. That your beliefs are so strong, that your insight is so clear that you can in essence, tell people what they think and believe.
Once you give yourself this power, then you also give yourself the power to label their nature and character. Being called a sexist or a racist is a personal attack and not one that should be taken as lightly. It definitely should not be thrown about as carelessly as some people here do.

What sexism has in common with racism is that it is predicated on a system of beliefs based in flawed logic, stereotypes and misconceptions. It is also used to perpetuate itself through ignorance and intolerance. If the joke wasn't sexist to you, perhaps it was to someone else. Apparently it was. If person A were offended by it, do they not have reason to whine about it? I'd say yes. Should they be accused of being the sexist because they took offense? No. That's what I'm trying to say. Someone got offended, someone else accused them of...of what, being offended and perhapse it was thier own fault they're offended? That doesn't make sense. Especially if the accusing party uses thier own subjective experiences to negate or trivialize the offended party's reaction. That is insensitive. But giving people shit for whining is to be expected. That's normal and people can make whatever they want of that because it isn't fundamentally wrong. There's a difference.
